| iSCSI questions
Hi everyone,
I am pretty new to SAN and ISCSI type stuff, I don't need it for work or anything right now but I wanted to get ahead of the ball game and start playing with it.
I set up a iSCSI "disk" in freenas and connected to it from other machines and so far it is amazing.
I was able to get 800mbit per second from my new desktop to my new server!
Anyhow the questions:
in the real world what is it most often used for? I noticed that you can have multiple servers mount the same "disk" what can this be used for?
will start with those
Thanks.

| reply to luma Yes mostly clustering where storage is required to be shared, but also things that need high speed access to drives on a low budget or something like that. iSCSI is pretty cool . -- I tie a rope around my penis and jump from a tree, don't you wanna grow up to be just like me!!!! |

Ok, you've got me at a total loss on that one. -- The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. -- Bertrand Russell |

| reply to luma Do any of these cheap iSCSI solutions perform enough to use a database (MySQL) on them? Wanting to get more disk space for our datawarehouse but it would be nice to get a device that is expandable and can be used by other servers (obviously not the same partitions/volumes). -- iPhone + Installer.app - best invention since sliced bread! |

As always, the answer is, "that depends". When you ask a question such as that, you really need to provide a lot more in the way of details. With the right kind of storage subsystem attached through the right kind of network topology with the right kind of database application, yes, it will work just fine. | reply to luma Thanks everyone,
I am going to have to read up even more on it because from what I have seen it is very cool!
I have a freebsd machine running 6x 160gig Sata drives in Raid 10 and I used it to set up a iscsi target (fake 10gig disk) and then I used windows 2003 and xp to connect to it and do some tests and it was amazing! very fast.
