[Vista] Sound settings with headset

I have a laptop and a plantronics usb headset with a volume control button on the unit... Here's the situation. In windows xp, the volume works perfectly... I can either use the sliders in windows or the volume button to raise and lower the volume from silent to loud. However, in vista, if i lower the sliders to 0, or hit the - button on the volume switch on the headset, some sound still comes out. If i mute it through windows or using my keyboard button, it gets silent, however, the sliders don't work as advertised... If this is indeed a vista thing and not a plantronics thing, anyone got any suggestions as to how to fix my situation?

What Plantronics usb headset do you have?

What make/model of laptop?

What sound device do you have and are you using the latest drivers?

I have the plantronics dsp 500 headset, which connects via usb. I suspect that it's the headset and not vista, because my built in sound card for the laptop (a realtek hi def) works perfectly fine. If it is the headset, it will just have to be an inconvenience till i get a new headset. I've got my computer set up to where I like it with Vista, and i'm not going to revert to xp because of that problem!

The problem could be with the driver Vista installs for the headset.

BTW, if you double-click the headset in the Device Manager > Driver > Driver Details

What drivers are installed for this device?

What are the "file versions"?

plantronics headset

driver provider: microsoft
driver date: 6/21/2006
driver version: 6.0.6000.16386
digital signature: microsoft windows

I'll do a search through microsoft for updated drivers... In the meantime, do you have any ideas as to where to look?

Consider installing the following USB update for Vista:

»support.microsoft.com/kb/941600

BTW, did the headset ever work properly?

yeah, it worked fine in xp, and it works fine now on another computer in my house using xp. It's definitely its interaction with vista.

all right, i tried that update that you suggested, but it stated something to the effect that this update does not apply to your system... I did install the intel inf updater thing, so maybe that will do the trick... Any way to get that patch from microsoft to work?

You should also be able to pick this patch up at the Windows Update site. It should appear as an "important update" - Update for Windows (KB941600)

Perhaps you have already installed this patch. If so, KB941600 should show up as an installed update in Start > All Programs > Windows Update > View Update History

All right, I have that KB update listed in my windows update history and it's still playing sound when the thing is at zero in windows. If there's any other suggestions, i'd be more than happy to try them... If not, thanks for your help, but its no big deal really. It's mainly an inconvenience rather than something that is worthy of redoing my system. Please though, if you have any other suggestions, i'm all ears!

Can you check the driver being used by the headset again.

Double-click the plantronics headset in the device manager > Driver > then click on "Driver Details"

What driver(s) are listed under "Driver files"?

When you click the driver(s) under "Driver files" what is the File version (listed underneath)?

all right auggy, i applied KB933262 from microsoft.. It updates the usb driver and fixes usb audio problems. Unfortunately, my headphones are upstairs with the rest of my peripherals because my father in law is sleeping in the bedroom! If you've heard of this fix, let me know what i am to expect tomorrow when i plug everything back in. I am confident in this fix as it updates the usbaudio.sys file to version 6.0.6000.20539. Unfortunately, the patch is only available through request from MS. here's the link to the KB article

Good luck with the patch.

That update has helped a lot of users with USB audio problems in Vista and has potential for your problem.

I believe that patch will be included in SP1.
