Re: [CritEditY] Suggestions and opinions needed

I agree with altermatt completely. While B&W can cut it for some shots, not particularly so with these while the color really brings character to otherwise lovely structures but not very interesting unless one is into statues. The lighting in the colored shots actually picks that first one up and gives it tremendous life. The second one is also better with color although over all, it's not very interesting even then.

the whole, "look at the pretty lighting" stuff to notice that it is boring
Ah, but my point actually was that the first one, which could have been boring just because it's so static, wasn't boring for me BECAUSE of the amazing lighting. I liked it. And the lighting on the second WAS pretty, and a great example of maximizing light to enliven a subject although the photo as a whole still didn't grab me.

Because the lighting enhanced these pics so much, the color versions have it all over the b&w.

FWIW: In the first set, the color one wins for me because the light-play is what livens an otherwise static shot. I do like that one. In the second set, while I guess I prefer the color one, it works best as a "catalog" shot---here's an interesting design---rather than a photo that moves the viewer at all. That shot doesn't resonate for me at all, but the lighting there, too, is very catchy.

Am looking forward to seeing more from you with the new camera, another one that's on my "wish" list!

Show me someone who's satisfied with their pictures and I'll show you someone who probably isn't very good. It's a fact of life, humans learn through mistakes (or at least some learn). I think most of what I've shot is pretty awful, but I keep at it anyway. I wouldn't fault your technical ability, but the two examples you posted are pretty static. The B&W conversions are an improvement over the distractingly bright colors, but the tight crops eliminate context. How and why these objects fit into their surroundings should tell a story and that's missing from these two shots.

That's my .02

Thank you for that suggestion, I don't know why but I was used to using that with my rebel xt and just naturally went to it with the 20D. I will set it back to 0 for future shoots

Nice camera!

Your -0.6 EV is set to decrease the average exposure from what the camera thinks is correct. I personally prefer to bracket exposures with a new camera to know it's exposure traits or use the AEB setting to do it automatically and leave the EV at 0. Then you will learn how to compensate for unusual lighting conditions by adjusting f-stop or shutter speed and have more control of how you shoot. IMO

So I am still getting used to the new camera and lenses, and I am hoping to get some suggestions and critiques so that I am able to get better. I really like the equipment but am thinking my pictures are not reflecting it....Please help, be as brutal as possible.
