My experience in attempting to remove vundo

Yesterday while running spybot, the dreaded Vundo appeared. After encountering the same this summer and taking a shortcut I thought i would suck it up and go through the laborious process of following the mandatory steps that the SCU requires.

What I encountered along the way.

1a. Spybot: no problem.
1b. Ad-Aware: no problem but Microsoft Antispyware is not free (googling Microsoft Antispyware, takes you to a website (that looks very Microsoft) but requires $19.95 to purchase which i did because i wanted to follow the directions)
1c. Defender: no problems
1d. AVG: no problems

Online scans
eTrust web scanner name has changed. if you don't click the current and former name tags you won't see eTrust at all.

TrendMicro (PC-cillin) was last updated 4/07. No there is internet security 2008. I couldn't get it figured out so I did just the Housecall program. It picked up 4 items so i am currently rerunning. in the process the Microsoft antispyware popped back up.

One more running of Spybot showed NO Vundo, but i think i need to trash to Microsoft Antispyware.

just one persons experience. thanks for reading.

UPDATED (after removal from the other forum)
The "Microsoft Antispyware" program that i downloaded and paid for is nowhere to be found in "Add/Delete programs". So where does it hide to delete?

The security cleanup forum has very specific mandatory instructions at the top of their forum page.

there is no mention of Microsoft Antispyware, as such, in the Faq.

edit: software you purchased, did you install it after downloading it?

Please check the last 2 lines before:

"1.c Windows Defender (Microsoft) 1 (freeware)"

I also printed these pages and will provide a PDF as an attachment if the wording has changed since my first attempt to post on the SCU earlier today.

Windows Defender is not Microsoft Antispyware (it was known as such in its beta stage) that you had to google for. There is an active link in the Faq to the free software.

Any changes to the Faq(s) are logged by the system

I would like to know what you downloaded and paid 19.95 for.Because it was not Windows Defender or Microsoft Antispyware or what ever you want to call it.Could you provide a link to that download.

what am i not understanding here.

the last 2 lines BEFORE windows defender in the parentheses mentions 2 freeware programs that are recommended..i assume recommended when the instructions suggests "additional freeware scanners"

(If you are running Windows 2000 or WinXP, download and run these additional freeware scanners to clean for trojans and spyware (Microsoft Antispyware and Ewido will not run on Win98/ME).)

Not sure what i paid for...I have canceled my credit card and have contacted the company if no response will reformat my drive later and chalk it up to a learning experience.

I think you will find that the OP found this as the top paid search link in google and then downloaded it

Not sure either, though I think I can guess that it was
rogue antispyware. Anything that claims to be Microsoft
Antispyware (there is no longer such thing anymore as it
is now called Windows Defender) and furthermore charges
you money to use it is likely of that ilk. Cancelling
your credit card is perhaps the best thing you did.

Excellent point.

I did look down the list but didn't see anything else that came across as cleanly as "Microsoft Antispyware" so i went with the obvious.

should the instructions at the other site be updated? would you have read it the same way. My guess is that you would have, but you'd have picked up on clues that I didn't.

This is what I see from the link you just posted.

That is why I asked him what link he used or saw.I see nothing that asked for 19.95.

it says free scan. It's not until you attempt to delete the infections that you get hit with buying the product.

Ok thanks for the clarification on that you did not state that in your original post.

Thats right..others have complained about the same tactic..and then good luck cleaning the AntiSpyware Program off your system when you find it does not do a good job.

My OP was primarily to point out some disconnects that I discovered from the instructions at SCU versus my experience. The antispyware part has seemed to take on a life of its own though. Lesson learned.

Thanks to all for your input!
