shaving the manly face

shaving sucks
even after many many years why is my skin not working with me!?!

just randomly either
-hairs grow in,
-or they stay below the surface and so it doesnt get shaved well (this sucks the most)

im on electric, new blades+foil, fast motor (panasonic)
shaving over dry skin with baby powder to avoid direct contact,
i dont do the same spot more than 2-3 times
i got a schedule: everyother day
i use cream afterwards to keep soft and calm

(
-tried long time ago the mach blades but just felt butchered for those couple weeks so gave up
-tried electric wet shaving, very nice clean shave, but started a huge in-grown hair problem that lasted 2 months
)

what is that product for black men for razor bumps? it looks like some sort of hair removing cream? anyone used it?

are there any secrets to getting a good clean comfortable shave on one's manly face because im all out of ideas, and i feel like shaving my eyebrows...

I have the same problem...My skin is very fragile and any kind of shaving irritates my skin and gives me rashes etc...It suck as you said. Im only 18 so im told that with time the skin hardens? I dont know. My dad shaves everyday and nothing happens to him.

I have resorted to just trim my face. Its much nicer since I dont have of the rash/irritation problems.

yes beards are manly
but i cant look like a wild beast among the little suited babyfaces at work, ... plus, ladies dont like to get scratched on the face with my tough manly abrasive beard...

i was once 18, ah yes, good times,
...dont know what it is with the dads...maybe i should try that,
... or maybe its the years of wife slapping the face that toughens the skin...

I have not used an electric razor in a _long_ time and I'm sure the technology has changed a little Recently I started working for a company that does not allow facial hair so I had to shave. I was looking at electric razors and reading reviews. One thing I noticed, you need to spend a lot of money to get a good one. Have you tried one with good reviews? Read the reviews on the one that you are using.

When you shave with a bladed razor did you shave in the direction that the hair grows instead of against it? Goinging against the hair will give a closer shave but then you can get ingrown hairs.

In either case, try shaving after you get out of a hot shower.

Try the M3 Power... I'm extremely manly and nothing works well... especially electric. But, these vibrating blades have proven to be the best for me... and you don't have to buy the M3 blade, but can get the cheaper Mach3 blades. There are some expensive shave oils out there that seem to help as well.

I recommend old fashioned "wet shaving", using a simple double edge safety razor. The blades are cheap and can therefore be discarded and replaced at the first sign of dullness, which causes pulling of the whiskers which leads to ingrown hairs.

You can find tons of info at Badger and Blade, which is one of my favorite web sites. Since I discovered wet shaving, shaving has changed for me from a detested daily chore to something I actually look forward to doing. »www.badgerandblade.com

the one i keep using for some 5 years is the panasonic with linear motor (fast, no pinching) (tried the rotary with the 3 rotating thing but it burned my face too much, also pinched)

yup, works best when dry out of the shower, but still get skin issues,

going with the grain on my neck it doesnt shave most of it, so i have to go against the grain. (most of the problems do arise on the neck)

Well, I'm not manly but still shave . The product that I finally settled on is the Remington ES-1000. I was in Florida vacationing a couple of years ago and someone used that on me, when they cut my hair. Needless to say, I was sold. I found one on eBay? or somewhere for around $50 USD. I do get ingrown hairs and had to deal with it for quite some time. Interesting, I don't remember having this problem when I started having a beard around 14 years of age when I was living in Philly. And I have used all sorts (except for Nair) of products, the depilatory (sp?) Magic Shave (the $hit stank and my mom would get pissed because of the smell). I tried the Magic Shave cream (not the powder) and would work except if I didn't get it all at the first time then that's it. My skin would scream if I used it again. I used Norelco but the damn thing would pull my hair (ouch!!! ). When my beard is too much for the Remington, I first use a beard trimmer to get it as close to the skin, then use the Remington for the rest.

I use King Of Shaves gel on face and head. Can be found at any drug store or Walmart/Target.

Rinse off face and apply gel. Apply a little water and shave away slowly.

I use regular ole razors...

Tried the Mach 5, thought it was cool, the vibrations helped a LITTLE bit though. It was an easy shave, but to me, the razor dulls out too damn quickly. I find the dime a dozen 3 bladed razors to be the best, use em maybe 5 times, toss em.

One thing I do is go with the grain when u first start shaving, getting most of the thick or longer hairs out the way. THEN go against the grain verrrry carefully until you get the desired look. Im a skinny guy, so its A LOT harder for me to shave then most others. Specially my neck, where one false move an out comes my adam's apple. lol, j/k, but its harder to shave, for sure, so I'm always looking for a better way.

I think the best way to find those verrrry small patchs that you can't see is to use your index finger and have it work as a marker, staying ahead of the razor. I do this for a close shave: razor in hand, secured with my thumb, index finger nail side feeling my skin ahead of the razor, again, serving as a marker, then shave where you feel the patches of whiskers...lol, its great, try it out man.

I find that neck hair grows in many different angles, so taking it a patch at a time works wonders. Shaving in the shower is the easiest, since you got the constant stream of water. After a shower is good too. Lastly, I noticed you gotta be kind of quick with the shave, seems if you take to long, the smoothness of the shave goes down, and thats when shit starts hurting, even with more shaving cream.

Lather up, go with grain, lather up, go against the grain, working with small patches once you get to the neck. Try not to over-shave the same spot for more then 3 times or if your bleeding.

Peace and goodluck...lol

PS, Tim, great website! Thanks for the link.

Question though: Whats the differnce between applying shaving cream with a brush as opposed to with your hand/fingers?

PEACE!

I use a Braun SynchPro 7505. Like your panasonic it has a fast motor but it vibrates. Most electrics tell you shave in a circular motion, but the Braun is used in an up-and-down or back-and-forth motion. The Braun has a different type of foil. I shave both my face and head with it and it never burns and gets the long and short hairs.

You may have a condition called sycosis barbae, or barber's itch.

You're welcome.

A shaving brush sort of scrubs your skin and whiskers while you are lathering. Of course, I have also seen people who lather with a brush, then massage it further with their fingers. Everyone has their own ways.

I don't personally know anyone who has ever liked electric razors.

In my experience, cheap, generic blades tear your skin up and don't last as long, negating any savings. Ditto for the disposable jobs.

I use Schick Quattro. They are amazing!!! Super-close shave and you won't need a dermatologist when you are done. I swear by them and wont use anything else.

They are quite expensive (about $2.00 each), but that cost is offset by not having to replace them as often. I can go a month or longer on a blade, and I shave every day, including weekends.

Electric razors suck. I've found the best way is to:
-soak a hot face towel with almost scalding hot water and wash the face
- cover face with regular soap
- hot face towel again
- shaving cream application
- the previous technique brings all the hairs except the ingrown ones, above the surface.
- shave with a blade - I use the M-3 vibrating blade

I get a few ingrown hairs from time to time (I'm white). After shaving, I take a straight pin (the kind you get with shirts), sterilize it in a butane lighter flame for a second, and use it to go under the ingrown hair, and 'dig' it out. Once it is out, shave it opposite to the grain. This tends to cut off the curve, so it grows straight, again. (I know, it sounds odd, but I heard this tip somewhere else - it works.)

Then I'd suggest using a good skin balm both before and after shaving. That should help.

Girlfriends, casual acquaintances, and random women on the sidewalk will help you toughen it too, has been my experience.

Bowie knife and a hand held mirror does it for me.

See »dermnetnz.org/acne/pseudofollicu···bae.html for one possible explanation. A visit to a dermatologist could give you some guidance/help.

This is a condition very prevalant in African Americans - and to the degree that even the military will grant a "shaving waiver" to members who are afflicted with it. They get to grow a (short, well groomed) beard in an otherwise clean shaven world.

I had the same problem. I found my main problem was what I was using to shave with. Electric razors caused all kinds of havoc for my face. I even used a straight edge to shave with. I spent $20 on the holster alone. I finally settled on Merkur Heavy Duty Safety Razor from amazon.com. I bought platinum tipped razors and I have not looked back since. I am also a fan of the hot towel method. Opening up the pores is important.

The best way to get ingrown hairs for me is to let the Mrs. do it. She can see what I've missed.

A good concave shaving mirror also works. I use one with the 'accordian-style' arms.

Along the lines of the hot towel method for opening the pores, I always shave in the shower. I bought myself a nice fogless shaving mirror. Makes all the difference in the world for me. Here's a link for some good fogless shaving mirrors:
