magilladke posted : Yea I've been looking at the triple play. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I'm with ViaTalk and am starting my FREE year of VOiP. The need for additional boxes is the tough part right now. I have a few extra TVs and it makes Verizon more expensive. I do like the HD movies w/Comcast onDemand once in a while. Hopefully Verizon will have this shortly.

Did the push for returning equipment to Verizon wireless stores happen in PA? That's another gotcha I've been contemplating with Verizon. The fees for an upgrade are crazy considering you can't drop off/pickup boxes locally.

BioGeek posted : I guess mileage varies greatly in each area. Just like VZ doesn't offer the super cheap 50/20 tier here to compete with OOL, they must have different cable prices here. Even with these increases, it is cheaper for me to have fios cable than it was comcast. Not only is it cheaper for an identical setup, but it is still cheaper when I get a little more. We are about to finish the switch and comcast informed us of a price increase as well. With that fios is now assuredly cheaper.

ramandala posted : Don't forget that the fiber crews used to place the fiber runs in conduit as the fiber traversed your yard. The conduit was "too expensive" so now (at least in southern CA)the fiber itself is buried just 6-8 inches deep, right between all of my plants and sprinkler lines. So, that is one of the reasons you now see an $80 service charge. They are saving money on the front end with cheaper installs and so they don't have to pay it on the back-end, they changed the TOS to include the $80 fee for me cutting the cable when I plant flowers or fix a sprinkler line in MY YARD!!! Oh joy!

afiggatt posted : I'm disturbed as well by the $80 service charge for a visit. I imagine they will waive it for swapping a bad DVR, but it could easily be a guessing game on whether they will ding you $80 for the service visit. The no charge for a self-install is good, provided there is a office in the area that I can swap STBs or DVRs at.

But will self-install be expanded to include cable cards? If the damage is $80 for someone to come out and stick in cable cards (hopefully a single M-card) into the TivoHD, that is way too steep. The self-install should be expanded to include cable cards as well. Based on the reports of the cable card installations, the Tivo owners with the Tivo installation notes know more about the installation process than do the Verizon techs.

legalaliens posted : I called Verizon and found out my original commitment was for only one year, from Feb 06 through Feb 07. Apparently, I never had "Triple Play", I must have just had "Double Play". That's news to me. She said you needed to have "Freedom Essentials" phone to have Triple Play, and if I signed up for this "Freedom Essentials" phone, I would save about $10 per month (from what I currently pay) and have unlimited local (right now I'm limited to 50 calls) and free long distance (don't think I had free long distance before). The kicker is I need to sign up for two years and early termination is $199. This was no big deal for me since I have no plans to dump FiOS TV, internet, or phone anytime soon, so I signed up for the two years.

JPL posted : I'd like to get more details on what that in-house visit is all about. I wonder if it's going to be set up more like phone service - if it's a problem outside your house, then there's no charge, but if it's inside your house you would get hit with that charge. I'm guessing that they'll offer a home protection plan too. That's really the only increase that has me upset. The other increases are to be expected. Not that I'm thrilled with them, but with all the new channels, expansion of VOD, and the like, it's going to raise the price of cable. It's not just here... Comcast just did a double-digit percent increase of their service around here... DirecTV is going to charge an extra $5/month for HD channels with no corresponding SD channel (e.g. HDNet). All that extra stuff costs money. To expect that cable rates wouldn't jump over the next couple of years is just not realistic. I'll bet that rates continue to outpace inflation over the next couple of years.

One thing that I noticed on that list that was the silver lining - they are going to have an option for a self-install upgrade.
