Go to the FIOS fanboy forum. So like 0.0001% of US households can get FIOS. The article is about bringing the remaining 99.9999% of us a better broadband and TV.

Each new generation of technology requires some massive change. Going to DOCSIS 3.0 will require a lot of work and money so who know how far Verizon or AT&T will be with their overhauls by then. |

The difference here is though, that they can upgrade their equipment to the DOCSIS 3.0 standard, without interrupting customers still on a DOCSIS 1.1 or DOCSIS 2.0 modem, AND they can co-exist.
It is not unlikely that cable companies will start to upgrade their head-ends and nodes to 3.0 over the next few years, and maybe offering a FIOS-competitive package (e.g 40/10 or so) while at the same time keeping cheaper, regular cable packages.
DSL/VDSL is limited to distance, and FIOS means someone will have to drop a physical cable to your location. Sure, FIOS and Fiber is the way of the future, but DOCSIS & Cable still have a LOT of life left in them, without having to run new cables to the houses.
And yes, most cable networks are already FTTN, that is how they bring you digital television. Your coaxial loop is most likely less then a mile.
Cable networks will be able to offer a mix-n-match of DOCSIS 1.1, DOCSIS 2.0 and DOCSIS 3.0 modems on their networks. Users having a "lite" package and an old DOCSIS 1.1 modem don't have to change their modem (when it breaks they will simply get a DOCSIS 3.0 one, or even still a DOCSIS 2.0).
With FIOS, once you go fiber, Verizon won't ever put copper back in your building. Makes sense, but it also means that your cheapest internet option is going to be $39.95 ($29.95 for 6 months) and the NEXT person moving in may not need that fast of internet because it is an old lady who checks her e-mail twice a week and visits the knitting club website once a week. Cheap $14.95 DSL is no longer an option, let alone dialup.
From an investors point of view, cable still has the better deal. Its cheaper to deploy, and the current infrastructure (infrastructure is not the same as equipment) hardly has to be changed.

I live in an AT$T broadband ghetto and still have not seen any Yugo-Verse terminals being installed here. Who knows how far behind AT$T will be when Comcast fires up DOCSIS 3 in Coloma. LOL!!

Based on T's poor past performance, a reasonable guess would be that T will continue to redline my ghetto neighborhood.
The bottom line is that I'll have DOCSIS 3 long before the slackers at T actually make Yugo-Verse available.
