1 edit | Embarq offering naked DSL as a retention offer My inside source informs me that Embarq has started reactively offering naked DSL as a retention offer only. There will be no advertising and it will only be available if no other save offer appeals to customers. --

| Re: Embarq offering naked DSL as a retention offer Ah mine is not truly naked then... it's like just topless, I suppose. I have to pay the $9 but that's it. I think there is tone on the line and I remember them saying I'd be killed with charges if I terminated a call with it. I stand corrected. Makes sense that they get at least $5/month for it because they laid down the wires.
My cell service is free from work so yes I hear you. I always have to tell people not to give me the VOIP sales pitch.
SO... they're saying they'll cover the fee from the telco for you... I get it.

I think the $9 should be a flat fee (just the 9) then disable the line for any calls. They can totally do that but I bet they just don't want to do so.

| Re: Embarq offering naked DSL as a retention offer The 10 dollar charge is for not having a qualified telephone bundle. My 5.0 service is regularly priced 54.95 and i get a 10 dollar credit for the bundled telephone service. With the naked DSL, I will be paying 10 dollars more, but losing the phone service for a net loss of about 40 dollars a month (long distance too). | |

| Re: Embarq offering naked DSL as a retention offer I hear you. I looked into it more per Espaeth (I'm still pretty new so just got a 'real' bill this month). I get a $5 credit that was thrown at me for -like you alluded to- the numerous complaints they likely receive about the extra charges. I think I'm paying about $13 more tops for the POTS but I'll try a novel approach; honesty. I'm sure it'll get me nowhere but I don't want to 'dink' around a provider - would rather have a fair relationship. I've learned abusing the system is usually a very bad idea. No I do not want to marry Embarq before someone replies with that drivel. | |

2 edits | I've been looking at StoneBridge wireless ( »www.sbwireless.net ) as an alternative lately since they have a package deal they've offered to employees of my company where I can get 3/1mbps service for $55/mo. Pretty much on-par with what I'm paying for Embarq HSI but without the extra voice costs.
Since I had my alternative lined up I called in today to cancel service, and the whole experience went quite well. The first question my rep asked was if I was displeased with the service, and I explained that I was actually very pleased with the HSI service but the dialtone that I was required to buy to have access to it made it more expensive than my wireless alternative. She told me that there was an option where she could just offer me the HSI service, but she cautioned me that I would lose my reliable POTS access with e911. I accepted the risk and asked to move forward with removing dialtone. What's interesting is my rep stated there was no line access charge, and that I would be simply billed for the HSI service plus applicable taxes.
My next bill is 12/6 -- we'll see what things look like then.
-Eric
P.S. One fun anecdote to go with the reliable PSTN service: I have Viatalk VoIP service, and for home Internet access I have both Embarq DSL and Comcast HSI. Back in September there was an issue with Embarq's network in my area that knocked out DSL, my dialtone on my POTS line, *AND* the SprintPCS cell tower by me went dead so I had no cell coverage. I would have lost all phone service for 4 hours had it not been for Viatalk over Comcast Internet. POTS reliability usually is great, but even the phone company isn't immune from things breaking. News about the outage is here: »www.startribune.com/462/story/1397905.html

1 edit | Re: Embarq offering naked DSL as a retention offer Lucky you espaeth. just got off chat with them and they say "Direct DSL" isn't available in all areas... so how much more is Embarq gonna milk out from POTS.
EDIT: In fact that so annoyed me I just set call forwarding to a freebie voicemail service and went and disconnected all my POTS phones, I'll just wait and drop POTS when I can.

| Re: Embarq offering naked DSL as a retention offer that's a royal steal...erm, deal!
Basically the price you pay for the 10 meg package is $54.95 if you have the $30 phone package....or $64.95 for if you have a package less than $30.....
So realistically, there's no extra price tacked on; it's like paying the full price, but without the additional charges of a phone line.
if this turns out to be true, man oh man; this will be an awesome deal!

| Re: Embarq offering naked DSL as a retention offer My wife and I signed up for this today. We called and told them that we were considering switching to a WISP since the cost was less and we didn't need a phone line. The retention rep offered us the 5.0 plan alone for 54.95 a month with no voice. We took it and it should be effective before Monday. | |

If this pattern keeps up, Embarq will have a very nice naked DSL deal going on; many of the other telco's charge you a bit to have naked DSL; it doesn't look like Embarq will be charging you anything extra.
I'll be looking forward to this once 10/1 rolls around.

My approach would probably be this, "Well, I'm thinking a bout signing up, but I just don't know; EVDO is a little cheaper, and I don't have a need for a phone-line....is there anything I could do to not get a phoneline?"
All would be 100% true (EVDO is $50.90 for me after taxes) and I'd probably go for, at the least 5 meg...so....

Ahh well, this just came out...hopefully by the time DSL is available here (I'm going to guess the soonest will be March of 2008....thought June-July seems more likely) things will have changed a bit. If they see naked DSL as something people like...well, you never know.
