They use telephone your telephone number + customer code as your account number. When you drop the number you would be assigned a fictitious account number. You will need to resign up on embarq.com with this new account number.
I called in to ask about the status of the order and they gave me my new account number - I was able to get re-registered with that. Also the dialtone is now gone as of this evening. Now the only challenge is going to be to get Fastpath back again...

No more POTS telephone, seems they killed it a day ahead of what I was told..
According to Embarq my line was disconnected yesterday. Today the line still has dialtone, can receive incoming calls, and the 800 number calls I tried went through. It just won't die!!!

Have you been able to log into your online account on Embarq's site since the change was made? I get an account retrieval error ever since yesterday when they said the disconnect went into effect in the system.

! not another one!!! been gone for awhile. Good to see your still here with that since of humor.
I talked to them back in August and it struck me weird that they said I would still have internet access if the power went out on my pot's.They just upgraded all the underground so that sounds right to me. It's about time!!!!

lol, yeah i hear you. i don't use qos because i rarely have more than a thing or two on at once. okay i lied i use wireless qos when my wife's surfing but it's less impacting than full qos on my router.

from the looks of your posts seems like you have a lot going on over there. that's cool though. and TS doesn't make people sound as 'weird' as ventrilo haha. later.

That's why I use bandwidth management I've got my own webserver, picture gallery, teamspeak and have bandwidth limit set on each protocol/port so theres a balance but what do I know I'm just a dumb redneck.

Yeah Charter prioritized VOIP via port (so I heard) but cable has to fight way more near the home in some cases. I think users should be left to manage VOIP locally but it's a tough call because there is always some knob that blames a provider for things he/she is breaking or not understanding (I've been that knob more than once). Hard to say. I'm glad VOIP may lower ISP latency or more likely lower latency threshold TOS specifications.

I hear you. I looked into it more per Espaeth (I'm still pretty new so just got a 'real' bill this month). I get a $5 credit that was thrown at me for -like you alluded to- the numerous complaints they likely receive about the extra charges. I think I'm paying about $13 more tops for the POTS but I'll try a novel approach; honesty. I'm sure it'll get me nowhere but I don't want to 'dink' around a provider - would rather have a fair relationship. I've learned abusing the system is usually a very bad idea. No I do not want to marry Embarq before someone replies with that drivel.

VoIP doesn't use much bandwidth at all, Embarq wouldn't prioritize VoIP or supply anything beyond your typical bandwidth tiers, the only thing I could see them doing *IF* they offered a VoIP product would be to move subscribers to fastpath.
we don't know that, for certain. Comcast puts their VoIP on a different set of bandwidth (at least, so I've heard). There's a company around here that also does the same things. As for QoS...they could do if it they wanted to.

I'm not saying that "you're totally wrong, they would definitely do it", I'm just saying we don't really know what they'd do; given their track record, they probably wouldn't give you separate bandwidth or provide provider-end QoS, but you never know either.

I'd rather choose another provider for VoIP... I've looked at 3, vonage, viatalk, packet8.
I'll second that, I'm just saying they should offer it as a cheap alternative....after all, you never know; it could turn out to be awesome VoIP service (also, since they control the bandwidth, they could give a little extra bandwidth to those who have their VoIP). If done right, it'd be awesome, but if done wrong, it'd suck.

The 10 dollar charge is for not having a qualified telephone bundle. My 5.0 service is regularly priced 54.95 and i get a 10 dollar credit for the bundled telephone service. With the naked DSL, I will be paying 10 dollars more, but losing the phone service for a net loss of about 40 dollars a month (long distance too).
depends on how you look at it;

for some people, it'd be a net gain of $20.

My 5.0 download is supposed to come with 768 upload. All the speedtests I do indicate that 640 or so is what I have.
They're running g_dmt mutli-mode. If you're using a 660 they changed my ADSL standard to get me up to 864 but it was a royal pain... took two hours and 3 people total time to get it changed/back up. Techs kept syncing at 896 and I was stuck at 768 but had previously gotten 864 (we're talking sync here not actual throughput, you lose about %15 of your throughput based on your sync).

So you're syncing at 5888/768 (896 would be your full '768' rate upload after loss/overhead) which turns into just over 5000 and 655'ish. Do us all a favor and complain about it like I did. I don't care what DSL standard they put me on and I don't care if I have to buy a dang modem to support the full rate but don't tell me 768 then knock me down 100kbps without saying anything. It's over now but I was ticked at the time.

With 5888/864 (I can't get that extra 32 for some reason but the test sets can that testers had here... I think the 660 sucks, personally) I get 5050/740 consistently on actual throughput testing.

Both vonage and viatalk don't have any local access numbers and just found out about packet8 today from a friend they do have local numbers still researching. Back last year skype offers an unlimited outbound calling 12mos for $15 this year it goes to $30 still worth it and may renew that come January. Skype has a inbound account but like vonage and viatalk no local numbers and I'd like the service to computer independant to where I could hook up POTS devices like a fax machine etc, I've even given thought about an asterisk server, it's a voip server based on linux.

I wasn't so lucky. My line was supposed to go dead on Wednesday, but after things were still live today I called Embarq support. Seems my order to cancel was withdrawn in the system, so the CSR I spoke with today put my request through again. *fingers crossed*
