fivebyfive : Splitpair (Wayne) is correct. A noisy phone line will ruin a DSL connection or even an ordinary dial-up modem connection. A few years ago I had both crackling on the phone and problems keeping my dial-up connection, and the problem would usually appear in the fall, after the first rains (I live near San Francisco). I'd have to go out to my telephone junction block behind the house, loosen the nuts, spray them with WD-40 or similar lubricant and retighten them. The phone cables were also lying on the ground in the crawlspace under the house, and the crawlspace would regularly flood after heavy rain, worsening the problem. After a few years of this annoyance I replaced all the lines in the crawlspace with CAT-5 cables, stapling them to the floor joists where they stay dry and pestered Verizon to come out and replace the 1940's-era junction block with a modern NID box. I had no more dropped or garbled connections with dial-up after that, my phone calls were static-free, and when I switched to DSL it was also trouble-free.
--
Hopelessly lost -- but making good time.

marv60 : Since going from 1.5 to 3.0, I loose connection 2 to 3 times a day, but it usually comes back up in a couple of minutes, without me doing anything. I use to go thru all of the steps, recycling modem, etc. but it it would be back up after doing this. Tech support always assumes it is on my end. They sent me a new modem and a new router, but it makes no difference. I really believe it is a earthlink problem or a AT&T problem, they use my AT&T lines. But, since it is always up and running when I contact them they say the line is just fine, etc. Maybe, the lines are not up to providing solid 3.0 service.

Splitpair : Noise as you have described it is almost always a copper problem. If possible you need to determine if it is from the wiring within your home or outside of your home. To do so you need to locate your network interface device (NID) if you have one and connect a set there. If you still have noise then it is a telco problem and you need to convince tech support to dispatch the local telco out there to have it repaired. If the trouble is inside then you can trouble shoot it and repair it yourself or have the telco do it for your for a fee. For more information on testing from the NID check the following links.

»AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »How to check modem stats, synch rates & speeds from test jack at the NID.
»AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »How to check modem stats, synch rates & speeds from test jack at the INI.

Wayne
--
If you cannot fix it with a buttset and some beanies you ain't a technician.

earthlinker : I've been having a problem with my DSL connection dropping since Tuesday. It'll reconnect for 30 secs to a minute and then drop again and be disconnected for 5 mins then connect again.

The phone line is also having very bad static interference problems.

Calling the nincompoops at tech support was infuriating. They were adamant that it was on my end because I was the only one with the problem. The first two people I spoke to blamed my router, even though the static on the line persisted when I had disconnected it.

After sending multiple whooping sounds down the phone line they asked me to unplug everything so they could test the line. Eventually they called back on my cell phone to admit that it was a problem with their network and they would monitor it for the next couple of days.

Then I got another call back saying they had fixed it and indeed the phone line was clear again.

Then an hour later it broke again :(

Anyone having the same issues or have any idea what's going on?

Cheers
