Many file archivers use lossless data compression in order to reduce the archive's size.

1 edit | At home, I use WinRAR. Mainly it is used to extract archives I've downloaded, but I also use it to create archives as well. On my system, in its fastest mode, it can compress a standard DVD5 in around 10 minutes. Of course the tradeoff is less compression.
At work, I use both the Windows standard zip utility on one machine, and WinZip on another. -- "The trouble with computers, of course, is that they are very sophisticated idiots." - Doctor Who (from Robot)
