Itanium2 Performance

Has anyone had any experience with Itanium2 processors and Windows 2003 x64 Edition?

We are upgrading our current hardware (Dual Xeon) and need more than 4GB of RAM. The reason we are looking at Itanium2 and not the Xeon EM64T models is because the version of Oracle we will be using is only supported on Itanium based 64 bit systems (on Windows x64 at least).

Specifically, I was looking at the Proliant rx2660. »h40059.www4.hp.com/lot-little/products.html

I notice the clock speeds on Itanium are slower. Does this translate to performance or would these be comparable to current Xeons.

This is my first venture into 64bit territory. Any tips/advice/horror stories are appreciated.

Itanium is not the same 64bit as Amd64 that is the same thing as EM64T

Itanium requires a different version of Windows than the usual x86 or x64 versions. It needs the IA-64 version since it is not based on the x86 architecture like x64 is. That said, I don't think you need Itanium for the Oracle database but I don't know much about Oracle at the moment. If you haven't I'd suggest reading up on Itanium. You may find you want/need it anyway, if not for the database server.

Make sure you get the right windows 2003 AI64

If you go with x64 platforms you can blow the doors off and fill the boxes with ram as well. Quad Xeons have been a favorite for me on db boxes.

Arguably i have only run oracle on Sparcs. I have a severe distaste for Itaniums because the first ones were such a disaster.

Definately check with Oracle about which version they are running on. I have seen oracle on Itaniums. I have also been a bigger fan of the Dell r900 series running quad quad cores and 64 gigs of ram , albeit not cheap they run roughly 14 grand stripped. But are great for big database needs.

I've got plenty of Itanium experience, no Windows experience. HP-UX is my OS of choice on Itanium.

That rx2660 you are looking at is a fast little beast. I've been unbelievably impressed with the Itanium architecture.

Previous to my current position, I was a Solaris admin. The difference between UltraSPARC and Itanium is night and day. Itanium's FAST.

At work, I manage a pair of HP Superdome servers (probably a bit out of the price range for your project with 64 Itanium cores. It's got an Oracle database that processes over 130,000 transactions per second. We couldn't come anywhere close to that with SPARC, let alone x86.

Anyway - that rx2660 has HP's zx2 chipset which is very reliable, and very speedy. Also internal SAS drives, with an HP SmartArray RAID controller. Redundant power supplies, all the good stuff of real enterprise computing.

Anyway - we've got Itanium systems from the rx2600 up through the Superdome line, and everything inbetween. Love 'em! Best performing (AND MOST RELIABLE) UNIX systems in our data center.

Much recommended.

edit: p.s. - that rx2660 server can run Windows, Linux, HP-UX and OpenVMS - at the same time. (Well, OpenVMS will be in 1Q08, but the other 3 are available now.)
