 | You gotta realize... elsewhere in the world it's the government that's subsidizing technology deployment and saddling their own citizens with the burden. You want that?
It's not a fair fight to compare AT&T, et al in North America to those areas. But take away the subsidies and companies serving those areas would fall flat on their face. No way any company on their own can handle bandwidth costs for those speeds, just ask Comcast (bittorrent). It's just way too expensive. |

Your reaction seems to be knee-jerk anti-government. Data are needed before a comparison can be made. My guess there are two figures to think about: (a) end-user cost per megabit per second, for both 'tax' and 'direct payment', and (b) non-end-user cost: i.e., how much the non-participants have to contribute to support the rest of us.
OT, I thought the whole idea of not having the government do this sort of thing was so that there would be lots of healthy competition improving the available services? |

It's not a fair fight to compare AT&T, et al in North America to those areas. That's just so not true, nice try at putting the rest of the world down to preserve your blushes though. I'm sorry to say that the vast majority of the rest of the world has no state subsidy to broadband provision, still it's as good an excuse as any for greed and underperformance from your incumbents on their DSL products. |

2007 how many homes have access to Verizon 20/20 or 50/50 service??? |

AT&T is as subsidized as any foreign entity. The FCC is guaranteeing their existence thru rulings. The US could have as much bandwidth as Europe and AT&T (and others) can afford to do it. Since they have regional monopolies they just don't have to.
Don't think for a minute that government funding is making the difference. It's corporate greed. |
