This company is a beast!

Google is constantly pushing the envelope on technology. I would not be surprised if they come out with a PC-based operating system in the near future. Ever think about a whole Google computer?

Microsoft better take note and pay serious attention. I will be paying close attention to the G-Drive news. Google is not playing.

They already do have their own "version" of Linux that they use in-house. Weather or not they will make it into a desktop OS... that is just speculation. No confirmation and I think they denied it once as well.

If they do, it will most likely be a while in the future, only be a thin-client, and have most programs available through the internet... but most of the U.S. Would have to have 100mb/s+ fiber connections before that can happen. So don't hold your breath.

Re: This company is a beast!

Their house version of Linux is said to be Debian based and is their own installation of chosen applications.

I doubt that the Linux that Google uses in house would be much different from Ubuntu (my current distro of choice) except for their own applications that are installed on it.

Why would Google want to run a binary distro? Because thats what you run?

Re: This company is a beast!

Uh, no. If you read what I said, I have heard that the house version of Linux is Debian based.

I have never seen much more than screenshots. I do however doubt that there is anything so special about it that they would feel the need to pass it on to the general public. It is likely not functionally different from something like Ubuntu.

What part of that hangs in your head? And yes, I do know someone. Just never felt a real need to ask specifics about the Linux distro that is on his computer.

No worries mate.

I am trying to find out what is different about the Linux version that is used at the Goog. I'll post back if I find out.

Re: This company is a beast!

It actually is a modified version of Ubuntu. There are those that use Suse and Fedora and likely others, but Ubuntu is what it is.

I highly doubt it's a standardized kernel, it probably has clustering built into the current because of Google's HA environment. No stock Linux 2.6 or 2.4 kernel could handle the kind of demands a single Google server in a cluster must withstand.
