I think that's the bet Verizon is making; they'll have something better long before that and they can upsell more expensive services.

It's always more expensive to get new customers than it is to keep the ones you have. This looks like an attempt to keep people around for a few years without hearing too much from them. There's a two year contract, so I have to believe they figure within three years they'll have more compelling offerings rolling about about that time.

Might just be increased DSL speeds, might be fiber.

One thing is certain, consumers always like these "lifetime" offers even though the realistic lifetime is just a few years.

Surely the typical consumer understands that anything computer related (except computer monitors) isn't going to be "good enough" in just a few years.

Everything else that was "good enough" in the past is "good enough" now, or so it seems to me. When I say "past," I mean within the last 30 years or so, so it covers mobile phones and microwave ovens.
