Re: openSUSE "initializing the installation process" I haven't tried 10.3, so my comment is based on my experience with 10.1.
The boot screen should have an option for a "safe mode" boot. There should also be an "options" or similar button that allows other choices. You will need a choice different from the default. I had to use the "no local apic" option to install on this system.
