Something up tonight?

My speeds are pretty bad, and my ping is pretty much doubled (30ms usual, now 65ms to a couple servers) and im getting some packetloss. Been going on since around 5pm when i got home.

Anyone else experiencing this?

As you can see, it isn't that bad if you look at the traceroutes, web browsing is ok, but downloading or playing games there is a noticeable slowness. I can barely pull 120kb/s.

I was having the same problem, was pulling around 1/2 or so.

All sorts of different server tests.
I called tech support, they directed me to their speed test.

He told me after he heard how fast it was, that is the normal speed, and that because it was from 'out in the internet' there was a variation in speed.

I was disappointed. Another reason why i will jump to cogeco if I can.

I still don't understand how having these set service areas means that we are getting any benefit.

Just another frustrated mountain cable vision customer.

I haven't run a speedtest lately, mainly because it just depresses me everytime I see the results

Yah, it is pretty sad.

And what happens if the new speed doesn't actually make it, even after they promised??

"Mountain Cable-Vision, where do you want to go today??"

About 12 blocks west, so I can get cogeco..

Dunno guys - I haven't noticed any speed issues lately myself.

Can't test right now though - I'm at work.

It was a one day only thing (Nov28). I haven't noticed any problems since or before.

Still is HALF the speed of Cogeco.

Mr Shag I hear ya, I'm 800 meters from the closest Cogeco service point... almost makes me wonder.

Well, IMO, I'd rather have Mountain because of the price, their peering, the fact its unlimited, and the usenet that comes with it.

Cogeco, 10mbps down, bt throttling, usenet service with 3days retention, higher price, and caps + suspensions.

Although i do like cogeco in one way because they were actually offering higher speeds than most companies in Canada at the time they introduced 10 and 16mbps.

Edit: To add, I havent had any problems at all since getting hooked up to mountain in over a year(except this one day thing). BUT, what i'd really like is for Cogeco, Mountain AND Source cable to overbuild into each others service areas and compete directly. That'd be heaven. 3 Cableco and a telco fighting for your business.

I was using them for years, they might have been throttling the torrents, its hard to say.

I never had any issues with any cap. No mail or other warnings.

The other problem with the Usenet, I agree. If they did the same thing with the Usenet as mountain did.

The only issue was months-long issue with my speed. I kept logging it, and eventually was credited for the lost time on my account.

When i got the phone, there was free long-distance, as well as a few others. and it was Fast!!

I was very happy!

When I moved to the mountain, the building I am in wasn't cogeco, just this one. I told the girls in the outlet at limeridge that i was willing to string a cable from that store to my apartment..

I called source because they are next door, and seem to want to help with the price, and a speed increase.

Even though they are across the street from mtn cable they told me that they don't service the building either.

I don't understand the geographical limits.
Isn't this anti-competitive?

If bell told me that they would offer there business fiber with a phone line for a residential price, i would be there in a second.

Last month they started enforcing their cap policy according to the numerous reports in the cogeco forum and from Krispy. There have been a couple threads and posts with some pretty good proof that there is something going on with torrent downloading/uploading.

As for the service areas.. they were licensed -cant think of the word im looking for- to each company. If they serviced you they'd be in for some penalties i would think. Business services (fiber) are probably different, iduno.

Cogeco for all of downtown minus a small area(cant recall where exactly - but its serviced by Mountain for some reason lol) Cogeco for stoney creek, Mountain cbl for east/west mount. up to the north end of the linc, and then source cbl on the other side of the linc(south) to the end of Hamilton.
The rest of Southern Ont is pretty much Mountain, mount hope, binbrook, calidonia, jarvis..

I still think that Cogeco should submit a request to the CRTC to overbuild into the rest of Hamilton. I say cogeco because they're the bigger company and could most likely afford to do this.

I was looking at Cogeco's phone service and they're pretty comparable except Mountain offers basic service and Cogeco includes long distance.

Mountain: $24.99 basic service + 19.99 for 1000min LD= $44.98
Cogeco: $44.99 incl. LD

Its actually 1cent cheaper lol, but its not truly unlimited.

East 21st - 1 block south of Fennell - Cogeco
East 19th - less than 1 block north of Fennell - Mountain Cable

Less than a 5 minute walk apart and yet different cable companies (enforced). It doesn't leave much chance for competition really! I am totally happy with Mountain Cable but a little competition never hurt anyone, especially when it comes to prices!

Edit: Cogeco make you go through a 3rd party "prepaid calling card" for International calls - Mountain Cable don't!
