New webmail changes for legacy email users

I just (Nov. 30th) received this email from AT&T notifying legacy customers that there will be some changes from the old MailLink webmail and legacy homepages starting next week. This email may have been diverted to your bulk folder if you didn't receive it. It ended up there on two out of three of my legacy email accounts.

Dear AT&T Internet Service Member:

Recently we sent you an email telling you about some exciting changes to your
AT&T Internet Service that will be coming soon. As previously mentioned, in
an effort to streamline our Internet services across regions, we're taking
the best aspects from each to provide you with an even better Internet
experience. We wanted to follow up and provide you with a little more detail
on what you can expect with your new Home Page and Webmail, as well as make
you aware of a few important items you may need to know about before the
change (see What You Need to Do).

The New att.net Home Page
With the launch of the new home page you'll not only have a new look, you'll
get some great new features, including:
* A Customizable Home Page: Now you can really make yourself at home! Make
your Internet experience all your own by customizing your new home page to
suit your needs and put the information you want to see right at your
fingertips!

* Expanded Mailbox Storage: We're increasing your mailbox storage from 10 MB
per email ID to 500 MB per email ID. (Yes, that's 500 MB per email ID!)

* New Exciting Content: We're adding new content including more videos, more
games and added small business material.

* Instant Messaging (IM): you'll be able to chat with friends and family in
real time - even if they use other IM services like AOL, MSN, or Yahoo!

* Channel Links: You'll have convenient links to popular content categories
including many familiar ones, as well as some new ones - all listed in
alphabetical order for ease of navigation.

* e-Greetings: Send messages to family and friends for birthdays, holidays,
or other special occasions.

* Enhanced Search Feature: You'll be able to narrow down Web search criteria
to look specifically for certain items or listings like images, maps,
products, and more.

Other Changes
There are a few other differences you may notice with the launch of the new
home page. For instance, there'll be a slight change to the way that you
will need to sign in to the site. Since you'll be part of an even bigger
online community, when you sign in, you'll just need to select your domain
from a drop-down menu.

Upgrades to Webmail
We'll be upgrading to a new state-of-the art Webmail system, so if you use
MailLink, you'll be getting some great new features for your email as well!
(Note: If you use a client-based email application such as Microsoft®
Outlook® Express, Microsoft® Outlook® or Windows® Mail, you will continue to
send and receive email as you do today.)

The new Webmail system gives you a choice between two versions of email
applications, so you can use the one that suits your needs best. There's
Classic Webmail or Advanced Webmail.
* Classic Webmail is similar to your current MailLink with many of the same
features you are familiar with, and it works especially well with lower
connection speeds.

* Advanced Webmail offers many of the same features as Classic Webmail but
with a more streamlined look, plus enhanced functionality to make your time
on the web safer and more enjoyable, including:

* Easy navigation for quicker access to functions and settings

* 'Drag and drop' functionality to easily organize your email messages

* A preview pane to view e-mails without having to open them

* Anti-phishing features to warn you of potentially fraudulent email
messages and scams

No matter which version you choose, the upgrade is FREE and your email address
will not change. The upgrade will happen automatically. All you need to do is
select which application you'd like to use to view your email -- Advanced
Webmail or Classic Webmail -- when you log in to your email after the
transition. And you can choose to change your view at anytime when you're in
Webmail.

What You Need to Do
We'll be moving you to the new home page and Webmail system in the next week.
There are a couple of important things you should be aware of, or take note
of, before this time:

* You will need to sign-in to the site to be able to view any personal
settings and to customize the home page, so you will need to know your Member
ID (email address) and password. You will also need this information to log
in to your email. Please take note of this information now. If you do not
know this information or need to re-set your passwords you can do so by
calling Phone Support: for AT&T High Speed Internet call 1-877-722-3755 or
for AT&T Dial Internet call 1-866-722-3425, request "Tech Support", then
"Password Reset" from the interactive voice menu.

* During the change to the new Webmail system, you will experience a slight
delay in your ability to access Webmail while the new system retrieves
messages from your old inbox and imports them into your new inbox. When you
log in to your new Webmail the first time, you will see a message that your
log-in attempt has failed. This first attempt signals to the new Webmail
that it must retrieve your messages from your old Webmail system. This
one-time retrieval will take up to 5 minutes in most cases, so please wait
at least 5 minutes and then log in again.

Just an update unless they are doing dynamic drop down, choice boxes based on your IP and the region of the country that IP would locate you in, AT&T is taking this a lot slower than the email notice indicated.

As of today, I only see that the pacbell.net, nvbell.net, and the sbcglobal.net, have been migrated to the webauth.att.net site. Maybe they will move swbell.net by early next week.

They apparently have gotton to the SWBell region as of late yesterday/early this morning. The new maillink ~ webmail.att. net/ does not import any settings from SpamShield, so be prepared for Spam. This is of course if you utilize SpamShield.

I use(d) the 'only accept mail from' part of SpamShield and since the settings were not imported I was the lucky receipiant of 186 spams this morning.

I have moved my 'accepted email addresses' list into the new webmail settings. When doing so I noticed at the bottom of the page that att is going to be overly helpful in making sure we receive emails from them.

I am a little concerded about the part "... certain E-mail addresses are always allowed and cannot be blocked", I just got to wonder just what 'certain addresses' means.

From that settings page:

It looks like all legacy domains have been migrated now. (Edit: Except ameritech.net) I guess they held off the migration over the holidays.

The anti-spam Mailguard feature of the works much better than the legacy anti-spam measures. You should try it. Only about 1/10 to 1/20 the amount of spam makes it through Mailguard as opposed to what I saw previously on the Prodigy legacy system, so that means from zero to one spams per day get through.

I don't use the 'only accept mail from' setting so I don't know about it. I thought my choice of using the anti-spam filter was migrated to the new AT&T web site, but I might be mistaken.

I waited the required 5 to 10 minutes,but still can't login. I keep getting an error page. I wonder how long it does take?

Do you have a lot of mail stored on your account?

Prior to the migration I pretty much cleaned all the stored email out of my account including all the trash and bulk mail just so there wouldn't be much to transfer. Then once the new web mail was accessible, it bumped me off the connection and I had to re-log in to continue accessing it.

I had the same results. I gave it 30 minutes and tried again. Still got the login error. Guess I'll try again some other time.

Yes, this is only for the legacy email IDs that never switched to AT&T-Yahoo (or SBC-Yahoo at the time everyone was urged to switch over).

If you migrated an email ID to the Yahoo accounts, this wouldn't apply to it. It is possible to have "straddled" the migration and have left some email IDs behind on the legacy system. I had one person mention doing this several months ago.

I think once you migrated the master account to SBC-Yahoo, any new email subaccounts you create would be handled by Yahoo rather than the legacy system.

How can / does one transfer their Legacy @sbc / @swbell account over and maintain the email forwarding / functionality EVEN if the DSL account gets terminated.

Once you end DSL, your email ends in 60 days unless you pay for an AT&T dial up account to continue your email address
