 | How to configure Thunderbird with AVG AV and upgraded e-mail If you've had your Sympatico e-mail upgraded, you may notice that the free AVG Anti-Virus no longer scans your incoming e-mails due to the secure connection. Instructions for configuring AVG to use secure e-mail are at »free.grisoft.com/doc/5/us/frt/0/···#faq_622 under topic 677: "How to create servers for scanning e-mails - SSL communication". I'll summarize the process for Sympatico below.
Double-click the AVG task tray icon to open AVG Control Centre. Under Component click on E-mail Scanner and click the Properties button. Installed Plugins should be set to Personal E-mail Scanner. Click on the Properties button and then click on the Severs tab at the top right.
Click Add. Server Type should be set to POP3. On the left side, click on Connection and choose Fixed Host on the right side. In the box underneath enter pophm.sympatico.ca with Local Port set to 5200 (which is the default for AVG). Change Connection to "Secure to dedicated port (TLS)". The box "Activate this server..." should be checked. Click OK.
Click Add again and set Server Type to SMTP. Click on Connection and choose Fixed Host and type in box below smtphm.sympatico.ca with Local Port set to 5100. Change Connection to "Secure to dedicated port (TLS)". The box "Activate this server..." should be checked. Click OK three times and close AVG Control Centre.
Open Thunderbird and click Tools -> Account Settings... On the left click on Server Settings and set Server Name to 127.0.0.1 and set Port to 5200. User should be your e-mail address [name]@sympatico.ca (not your b1* account name). Security Settings should be left off (set to Never).
On the left click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) and click the Add button. Enter any description (eg. AVG Scanned Sympatico) and set Server Name to 127.0.0.1 and Port to 5100. Enter your e-mail address for User Name and set Use Secure Connection to "No". Click OK. Click Set Default. Your new entry should say (Default) next to it now. Click OK.
When Thunderbird prompts for a password, use the new password that you created when you upgraded your Sympatico mail.
Other port numbers may work, but the port numbers set in AVG must match the port numbers set in Thunderbird. |

 | I have been unable to successfully send mail using the settings described above (as per the AVG web site), so I recommend disabling the SMTP server settings in AVG (uncheck the "Activate this server.." box) and entering the server settings in Thunderbird. This won't scan outgoing e-mails, but at least incoming scans still work. Outgoing server settings are smtphm.sympatico.ca for Server Name, port 25, and TLS for Use secure connection. I'll check the AVG forums and try and follow up here once I get things working properly. |

| Scanning outgoing messages is a pretty pointless occupation anyway! Let's face it, anyone receiving a message that says "This message is certified virus free" would be pretty foolish. And if your email client is sending out emails on your behalf, that'd be pretty amazing!
I don't even scan the incoming mail stream, preferring instead to scan the attachments through the automatic file scanning action of the av prog as it closes the file. |
