| Stealing Wi-Fi Access...
Wasn't sure where too put this...
I read an article recently, and it stated that a person stealing the authors wi-fi connection was parked outside his house, with their headlights on for about 20 minutes.
Occasionally, this will happen in front of our house, a car just suddenly stops outside for about 20 minutes, for no reason that I can see. Nobody gets out of the car, they don't move the car, nothing. It just sits there during the day or night with lights on.
Anyone have a situation like this where they where stealing your wi-fi connections? Ours is secured, though.. |

| How is it secured?
You might have someone trying to get onto your network... WEP can be cracked "fairly easily" according to what I've read a few places
I use WPA2 with a 63-character key that I generated using a random key generator. I've also got MAC address filtering enabled. I don't think anyone is getting on. -- So put me on a highway, and show me a sign. And take it to the limit one more time... |

| Using WPA2: good. Using MAC address filtering: pointless. The MAC is transmitted as part of 802.11 frames, so it just takes someone listening for a bit and they can find a MAC to spoof. But generally, using WPA2 with a strong passphrase/key is quite secure. -- Hello...is there anybody in there? |

| reply to TurtleFan Well, right now we have not changed the router key. Stupid, I know, but all routers come with different keys so we figured what the hell.
Our neighborhood is not exactly 'tech friendly' that I know of . Mostly older folks except for the few kids entering their teenaged years hanging around. Would anyone be so cheap as too go around towns looking for open or easily breakable network connections too hack into? |

| reply to TurtleFan I'm not a car guy, so if I don't see it for a while I tend too forget about it. But, I have noticed two or three of a similar type of car stopping by., usually during the night. Even going so far as too notice a light on in the car and whoever they are waving out the window.
This car usually stays outside at the bottom of the street for about 20 minutes on end for no reason that I can see. That's why I think it's either the neighborhood kids messing around, or someone stealing a wi-fi connection...
I know my Asus motherboard on another PC has a program that lets you monitor connections and see who is on the wireless network. Does the ActionTech from Verizon have a similar feature? I have too look up and see what IP is needed too access it.. |

PLEASE make sure you are using WPA or WPA2(better) with TKIP/AES. |

| reply to TurtleFan My property has a secluded parking lot behind it that was a popular spot for drug deals, drug use, stealing wifi, and who knows what else. We even had a drug deal you could set your clock to. Two hooked up cars would arrive every Friday night around 11PM, hand something between the cars, and drive off. After contacting the police several times and receiving very little help I decided to take matters into my own hands. I started approaching cars with a flashlight and my registered handgun, which I always kept holstered and just for my safety. I walked up on everything from kids doing a drug deal to someone on his laptop obviously trying to connect to my network. Eventually word must have gotten out that there was a crazy guy on my property who might be a cop because its now vary rare to ever see cars parked on my property. (I never identified myself as a cop though) You might not want to handle it the same as I but being proactive about things can do a lot in situations like these. Of course handling it the same as I would be exactly what you don't want to do if you live in a gang infested neighborhood. My neighborhood is pretty safe and the vast majority of people I approached were just kids up to no good. |

| reply to SGR You're in the Lutherville / Timonium area? -I didn't think there were issues like that in that part of town. I'm in Ellicott City myself...
Anymore, more to the topic - I've got static addressing on my LAN, except for a ad-hoc DHCP server that I run, simply for the three STB's, which require DHCP. I've got it locked down by MAC, so if you try to get an address from my server, but don't match one of the three magic MACs, you'll get nowhere. Every now and again in the logs, I'll see my server tell me that there are no free IPs left in the pool, to give out, which means someone's "knocking on my door". |

| Tzale, it can't be trespassing if its my property. I own the parking lot. I also own the woods behind it. There is no reason for anyone to be anywhere near this property but myself, family, and friends.
Batsona, unfortunately every town has crime. We rarely have violent crimes but we have problems with drugs, petty theft, and vandalism. |

This appears to me as it being BEHIND the property you own. Maybe you should have said on my property BEHIND my house... But still, I wouldn't recommend going out there with a gun looking to cause a fight.... That's just looking for trouble... If the cops refused to help you out then maybe you should look into going to town meetings and bitch about the police's carelessness.

Maybe it's just two teenagers getting it on. lol. OR... Better yet, why don't you just watch them and see what they're doing. If they go onto your property, then you should confront them or call the cops...
