| Getting HORRIBLE speeds
»/tweakr/block:···a=normal
I can't figure this out... I am in a new condo complex in downtown Toronto with 100mbps Telus internet. Plug it into my computer and I get speeds of 2mbit!
I plug it into my Rogers instead and get the full 6-7mbit. But if I plug my laptop into the same telus port, i get upwards of 20mbit.
What's wrong!?
THANKS IN ADVANCE! |

2 edits | If your laptop gets 20 plus megs a second then the problem lies in your computer. Try updating your ethernet drivers, updates for your Operating system. Do you have Service Pack 2 with all the updates. What ethernet card do you have. Just a quick response. |

| reply to Kaitlyn Just tested.. used speakeasy.net/speedtest and got 22400kbps down, 1136 up
Same port. same wire...
On my desktop, I've tried both the motherboard's onboard LAN and I went out and bought a d-Link gigabit yesterday... same results.
I still find it odd that I am able to max out rogers at 6-7mbps... but only get 1-2 with the DSL which is supposed to be MUCH faster...
Yes have all updates... |

netwerk Premium join:2003-02-03 BC | you are getting 22.4mbps down and 1.1 up.
not 1-2 mbps
I do not know much about the ethernet to the suite stuff. What is the max speed you are supposed to get |

Is this where you live? That a pretty good deal |

@telus.net | reply to Kaitlyn That is the speed on my laptop. On my desktop I think I average 1500kbps down and 500 up. Same wire, same port in wall
It's supposed to be 100mbps internet, though clearly I'd be happy to reach 20 - which I can't seem to do from my desktop! |

| In regards to the fact you're -only- getting 20Mbps on the laptop.. check out this page on speakeasy.net.
Quoted: # Inaccurate Results Over 20 Mbps Our speed test is tuned to measure residential broadband services up to 20 Mbps over HTTP. It takes a very customized installation to be able to accurately measure up to 100 Mbps over HTTP.
As for the desktop not getting the same speeds.. not sure. But if it works with your laptop then seems to me to be a problem with your desktop. |

| reply to Kaitlyn You might want to try changing your network card settings from Auto Negotiate to Switch Network at 100Mbps full duplex.
To do this go to your local area connection properties. Beside the description of your network card you'll want to click Configure. From there click the advanced tab. There will likely be some property relating to speed and/or duplex. Set the value to 100 Mb full duplex.
Run some tests to see if it improves. I'd suggest doing the speedtest with telus.net to avoid possible bottlenecks on the internet. I'm sure many sites aren't going to allow that much bandwidth for an individual connection.. especially with those speeds.
It could also be due to a high rate of collisions due to an incorrect interframe gap.. see »support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315237 |

@rogers.com | reply to Kaitlyn psydfx - Looks like that was the issue! I found it out earlier and then saw your post.
I am getting 20mbit down and 2.5mbit up!
Does anyone know where/how I could test my connection speed to see how high it can actually go? |

| reply to Kaitlyn Happy to see you getting some decent speeds.
As for where you can test your connection.. you can try some of the sites here: »www.t1shopper.com/tools/speedtest/
Let us know what sort of results you get.
You can also try doing an FTP test from microsoft by downloading a large file or something and seeing what sort of speed you get. |

Care to clarify what package you really have?
This is more like an augmented version of ADSL2+ --- possibly annex M.
So theoretically, 24 Mbps/3.5 Mbps. |

1 edit | There was no mention of his service being ADSL. He has 100Mbps internet service in his condo. Fibre fed to the basement and ethernet to the suite (ETTS).
Follow the link netwerk posted and you might learn something.

1 edit | It was a trick post. I knew one of you would reply.
Kaitlyn: It's kind of impossible to know your actual speeds unless you know someone else using that same 100 Mbps fiber as well. Then you can gauge the speeds from there by getting that person to upload a >100 MB file to you.
As for your max upstream, probably a bit less.
I doubt any website is stupid enough to file-serve a large dummy file. |

1 edit | reply to GaiaChaos If there is no LAN wiring inside your housing complex, you will be charged ¥350 (¥367.5 incl. tax) for 50Mbps and ¥400 (¥420 incl. tax) for 100Mbps (NTT East) and ¥400 (¥420 incl. tax) for 50Mbps, ¥450 (¥472.5 incl. tax) for 70Mbps, and ¥500 (¥525 incl. tax) for 100Mbps (NTT West) as the device rental fee.

1 edit | reply to GaiaChaos Re: Getting HORRIBLE speeds
Ever occurred to you you are sharing connection with your neighbors? You will NOT (or never) achieve the full 100Mbps. I think the best way to test your true speeds is to use Bittorent programs. You can't rely on speedtests since you are on fiber.
EDIT: Replying to Kaitlyn, not gaiachaos. |
