You have a no sync issue which has to be resolved before you address the ability to connect with a remote server. The vp/vc settings do not affect sync. Once you have sync then you will be able to address the modem and change the settings from 8/35 to 0/35 so you can connect with the remote server. Stay at it and good luck.
