AirGig join:1999-11-21 New York, NY 1 edit | Bring it on! Use ALL the road construction money!! Bring on the fiber!! And to pay for it, use the road constuction bond money, thereby saving the environment by reducing global warming, increasing national security (by reducing foreign oil dependence to fuel the millions of cars in CA), generating new leading-edge technology jobs and increasing productivity!
Fiber is a long-term investment toward building the next "world", and yes, it's going to cost money. From a growth standpoint (growth creates new jobs), our physical world, well the US, is mostly developed. We desperately need another economic pursuit to keep millions of people employed and through their efforts generating added value.
Obviously, the Internet represents the next new world to be constructed. It's either going to be US leading the way or US chasing everyone else. The US invented the Internet, let's not loose the edge. Let's get moving with continuing to create the innovations and sharpening the edge so that we own the valuable new technology and can export it, at a premium, to other countries so the national debt and trade imbalance can be materially reduced.
There's no reason the US can't have 20 more Goggle, Cisco, Microsoft-like (add your most impressive here) companies with remarkable success stories, balance sheets and ecstatic shareholders and employees.
Let's sprint to put in place the infrastructure to make progess happen! Long term, the investment will pay for itself many times over and in many ways previously unattainable! |

AirGig join:1999-11-21 New York, NY | We can't wait that long. Every day we delay is another day we fall further behind. Just look at the giant lead the asian countries have over the US in the cell phone device market. Given our technical expertise as a nation, we should own that market!
Personally, I'd rather have a little government involvement in stoking the kindle of progress and know that others are benefiting by being gainfully employed, than experience the loss of high-paying jobs and the future opportunities the associated innovation brings along, than flat outright object to a funding approach that would have the greatest potential for success.
I'm just as fearful and unconvinced of the "efficiency" of government, but at least give support to the govt funding the project and then leasing out the infrastrcture to multiple (not just two or three), competitive operators, just as DSL is provided by multiple ISP's (AT&T owning the lines isn't necessarily optimum, but many companies are making money subleasing, none the less).
Deploying fiber throughout California would be a massive financial undertaking that private companies couldn't afford and their shareholders wouldn't have the stomach or patience for the very long term risk/reward.
Just as roads are built with public money, do the same with fiber which is simply the next step interestingly along the exact same physical paths (much cross country fiber is laid alongside rail road paths, which followed stage coach lines, which followed horse trails, etc.)
Let's not get stuck in the Internet horse and buggies days, let's get on building the new world now! |

 | reply to AirGig I do agree with that. Stay home and work and get the hell off the freeway. People drive to work just to sit at a computer all day. How silly. I guess the best part is they can escape the madness at their home. I really do think the way to stop carbon emissions (at least from cars) is to keep them off the road as much as possible. Just imagine what we could do with 100/100mb fiber connections to the home -- Lakewood Accountability Action Group LAAG | »www.LAAG.us | Lakewood, CA A California Non Profit Association | Demanding action and accountability from local government

Not to mention, she's a cutie. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I'm prep'in for my 5 min. drive to work. Yep, I COULD walk-takes 15 minutes. Don't though, as I prefer to be politically incorrect. |
