Bell or Rodgers?

The title says it all...

Bell or rogers...

My family use Skype, xbox live, and PC gaming all at the same time...which package form each company would be best?

Right now we have bell, but it seems a little bit crappy and slow...

cheers

Short Answer: Neither.

ISPs such as Velcom or Teksavvy offers better deals than the 2 giants.

But since you're already getting slow speeds with Sympatico, it may be because they've set you up with a slow profile. Post your line stat.

My own experience has been, unfortunately, better with Rogers (I can't believe I'm writing that). Rogers does charge a premium rate, but, you do get consistent speeds. Every. Damn. Time.
You pay about the same as DSL, but at least you're not dependant on the quality of your telephone line which might or might not be kilometers from the CO.
Once my contract finishes in the summer with Acanac, I'm going back to cable.

Hey, are you sure the slowdown is with your line? Because it could be a slowdown with Acanac.

But yeah, I agree with you to a certain point. When I had Rogers, I used to download between 910 KB/s and 934 KB/s everytime with a good server. Unfortunately, it was the bittorrent that made me switch.

So I guess, if you don't use bittorrent, Rogers will be good.

Oh, well, Rogers throttle bittorrrent.

Which means that you won't get the full speed when you'll download stuff off bittorrent. When I was with Rogers, the download speed varied from 25 kbs/s to 80 kb/s (SOMETIMES) while the upload was SLOW.

And looking at your Speed Test, your download is "normal" for a 5056 kpbs profile. But your upload, yeesh. Are you sure a p2p program wasn't open or that you weren't uploading when you did the test?

And well... with DSL, unless Bell connected you to ADSL2+, I don't think you'll be able to get faster than that (Other if you're lucky and they put you in the 6000/800 profile.
Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

Post your line stat.

Bell also throttles torrents. Seriously, don't go with either of those 2. Go with TekSavvy or some other serious ISP.

It's not any faster with Acanac. They'll deny it, but, the speeds are throttled way back during the day, and they're not much better at night. Since they're backboned on Bell, I'm sure it's Bell traffic shaping. At least with Rogers, the speed was always 4.7 to 5kbps. Not my crappy 1.3 to 2kbps dl, 100bps ul. It's crap. Good for surfing, and it's a cheap connection, but honestly. Who the fark these days wants dial up speed?

Acanac does not throttle bandwidth. Nor is Bell throttling our user accounts. All DSL providers use Bell for the last mile of service, but the transit or bandwidth is provided by Acanac. Bell is used for the copper line.
We can even offer test accounts to anybody who wants to try it for 30 days. You must currently have DSL service with another provider to take advantage of this.

That's not entirely accurate Acanac Inc.

Some DSL providers use their own DSLAM (or equivalents) mounted on the Bell racks providing service on Bell lines.

Some DSL providers use their own backhaul connection to their POP, some use Bell on a separate backhaul connection from COs to their POPs, some use Bell on SHARED backhaul connections from COs to the POPs, and finally, some share Bell's network to points CLOSE to their POPs and backhaul from a more local place.

Thus some 3rd parties MAY be subject to Bell bandwidth limiting actions depending on the specific arrangement. So please be careful about your generalizations.

yup, there was no upload with my torrents...

thats my results now...download seems much faster, but upload...

i am using a router (DIR-655) and that is my PPPOE client...

should that be the cause of the ridiculously low speeds

Try these speedtests too:
»speedtest.cogeco.net
»testvitesse.videotron.ca

If you still receive slow speeds, that means it's definitely on your end

Good point sbrook

Depending on the provider and the specific agreements with Bell 3rd parties my by subject to Bell bandwidth limiting. A good example would be Primus. I believe they own their own DSLAM equipment. ( at least in some areas)

As for Acanac: Throttling is currently not being implemented by us or by Bell.

sorry, one more question about the Acanac plan...

is the $19/month only for the first year then?
What will the prices be AFTER that first year?

The $18.95 promo is for the first year of service. If you wish to stay after the first year of service the price goes up to $33.95 including tax. Or about $32 before tax.
