| Voice Network Going to GSM?
So do we think Verizon's voice network will be switching to GSM as well? That's a pretty large expense to convert as their switches and cellsites. -- WinXP_Home SP2, 1.8GHz P4, 512DDR, DW7000, SatMex5, 1090MHz, RSL~87, WRT54G v5.0, WGPS606 Printer Server. |

| The whole LTE thing is a ways out. This is just for the phase beyond CDMA 1x/EVDO. Voice will be VoIP, most likely. LTE is just the end of a 'beta' vs. 'vhs' saga right now.. There will be more in the future. -- Canada = Hollywood North |

1 edit | reply to evoxfan LTE is an OFDMA-based technology that is different from both GSM and CDMA. VZW has expressed the intent to migrate to LTE, and numerous GSM providers have likewise expressed that intent. But as a technology, LTE has nothing in particular to do with GSM. Presumably, both kinds of providers will use VoIP over the LTE network for their voice service. |

The antenna's are what has to change on the cell site. The switches for data are there and they will just drop your voice on a data channel instead. No big changes needed. Teh gear would actually be less then the labor. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!" |

Teh gear would actually be less then the labor. Verizon uses two vendors mainly: Lucent and Nortel. Both are CDMA based systems and are not compatible with LTE. This includes the equipment at the switches AND cell sites. As far as antennas go, yes they probably will have to change. Antennas are far cheaper than the other equipment though. -- WinXP_Home SP2, 1.8GHz P4, 512DDR, DW7000, SatMex5, 1090MHz, RSL~87, WRT54G v5.0, WGPS606 Printer Server. |
