competition?

I really cant see how anyone can compete with the big telco/cable companys. Basically you would have to roll out your own network, especially if you cannot use existing lines. In our area a small ISP that I have run across offers DSL, but at an inflated rate because they have to pay what I would pay to get Broadband in the first place from the same telco. It seems small ISPs, as they come and go cannot compete.

I have not heard of a cable company that will share lines, has anyone else?

At some point back in the day some small cable company came in and invested money into a community to service it. Nothing has stopped anyone from doing that again. RCN overbuilds and so does WOW cable.
Just as your DSL price was high, your cable price would be high as well from the line leasing charges they will pay.
Why should the incumbent company run all the cable and let parasite companies come in and offer service on it?

Really.. look at your reasoning?

You do realise the majority of WOW! in the MI,IL,OH markets were aquired when Ameritech's Americast was sold off, after SBC bought Ameritech. So to say WOW came in and overbult is not fully accurate in this region.

My reasoning is that some say there is competition when there is none. When people complain about something they do not like about the service they get, the response in the forums is go with the competition. The business is pro "a lot of money" if I may use that term. It appears to me the small guy just cant seem to get ahead.

Thats true.
If you live in an apartment building or home covered in tree growth a Dish might be difficult. But there really is nothing stopping another competitor from coming in.

Nothing except return on investment as you eluded to. But again, even if each CableCo had to "share their lines" I can imagine not much would change. You still need someone willing to set up their headend and get all their licensing in place and what not...
