DSL Down completely

No DSL at all for the last hour here in Macon, GA. Anyone else? (I'm using MindSpring dial up to post this message. Bellsouth dial up couldn't do it either.)

Re: DSL Down completely

Do you get synch on DSL at all? Around here it's a DNS outage.

Try using the following opendns servers and see if it improves things (it worked for me):

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Re: DSL Down completely

Another thanks for the DNS numbers.
I've been totally down for well over an hour, and when it came back, it was only partial. Those numbers did the trick.
Gotta be pretty widespread too, because the help desk isn't taking any calls ... any calls.

I went to the OpenDNS site and it looks amazing. Is there any potential problem with using these DNS numbers permanently? My speeds are faster and according to their material, more secure. Can AT&T change my DNS back when/if it's fixed?

Perfectly safe. I've been using them for quite some time. I suspect AT&T doesn't care if you're using the Opendns, if for no other reason than it's less load on their own servers.

Re: DSL Down completely

Working for me in FL. One router generally does not take down a whole region. However, I am using AT&T/SBC-SouthWest DNS servers.

@funtimeoffers.com
no. they wont be able to switch it back, its embedded on you system unless you change to automatically get your dns settings from their servers or manualy hard code new dns server numbers.

OpenDNS rocks !!!

I have had one pc on OpenDNS for 6 months and now the others are switched and will NOT be switched back to BS's servers.

Used the OpenDNS and speed returned to normal. Bellsouth/ATT DNS must be having "issues".

My connection is up and working. I use OpenDNS.

My neighbor called and said she couldn't surf. I switched her DNS servers to OpenDNS and all is well now.

Re: DSL Down completely

Yep, there is no greater frustration then knowing that the dns servers are down, but not having written down alternate ones then calling every friend you know until you find one that is next to a computer and looks up opendns's ip for you.

Finally got the darn thing working, up yours at&t for sucky dns servers

Cheers,

Thank you. Those DNS numbers did the trick. I can't really complain. My DSL has been very reliable.

My setting was "On-Demand." Is it OK to leave it at that selection? Thanks!

Re: DSL Down completely

Frustrating - I have detected numerous DNS outages over the past few months, generally brief, with ATT/BellSouth; none this significant, though.

Re: DSL Down completely

Alright, Bellsouth's DNS servers in my area seem to really be bogged down and/or slow at the moment...

Time to make a switch.

Seems to be a problem here in the Nashville area as well. Thanks for the post about openDNS, I forgot about that. They have had issues before like this.

For hours here in NW Atlanta (Acworth) not able to get through to Tech support, Tech Chat, etc....finally got an online agent who reported....

AT&T eAgent > At this time the AT&T network is having issue with our DNS servers. This is causing your connection issue. We are currently working on resolving the issue as quickly as possible. There is no estimated time or restoral at this time. Thank you for you patience.

Pretty much useless.

Re: DSL Down completely

youre best bet is to hoep you can get ATT dsl tech's from the philipppines...those guys troubleshoot anything...the few who get through their lines and get those guys were turned to using the general 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 dns settings...which of course worked fine after....

problem was of course connecting to them.....

I'm down completely in Newnan, GA. Netopia modem has DSL sync, but the "Internet" light is not on. I don't think changing the DNS settings will fix it. The modem isn't even grabbing an IP address. Like others have mentioned, the support line won't take any calls -- it just hangs up after a few seconds. Grrrr!! I got work to do!

Just a quick heads-up on my problem: turns out my new roomie's modem was set to bridged ethernet, with the Linksys WRT54G set to do the PPPoE login. I set the modem back to log in with the router just routing (DHCP off), and then put the OpenDNS servers in the modem's DNS fields. All returned to normal.

I've used OpenDNS in the past, and have always had good luck. For those with Netopia modems, here's how to set the DNS entries:

1) Point your browser at 192.168.1.254
2) Click "Expert Mode" at the bottom of the left-hand menu
3) Click "Yes, Enter Expert Mode"
4) Click "Configure" in the left-hand menu
4) Click "Connection" in the left-hand menu
5) Enter the OpenDNS servers (208.67.222.220 and 208.67.222.222), one each in the Primary and Secondary DNS Server fields.
6) Click "Save and Restart"
7) Surf happily (unless AT&T is still having authentication problems -- I think I had both)

if your "dsl" is on solid, and the internet light is off..it most commonly is an issue with you authenticating to you ISP's servers. go to your command prompt...

1. click on start
2. click on run
3. for xp type cmd
4. ipconfig on blinking cursor
5. get default gateway
paste number for default gateway on your address bar...this should get you to the modem page where you can enter you account username and password...save it and go...you should be connected....

hope it helps...

I called the AT&T DSL support number, 1-888-321-2375 from 2 different phones. It never rings, it just disconnects.

I asked a operator for assistance, she said that the line is busyed out. I informed her who I was calling, she said that a lot of people have called in.

I guess AT&T is WELL aware of the issue.

Thank goodness for OpenDNS!!!

I have had intermittent problems since about 1830 here in Fl. The router has been in synch, but the connection was still down.

It's back up now - funny thing I can connect to DSL Reports, but I can't get to the ATT web site.

611, 877 #'s ring busy and when they don't ring busy no one answers or they get disconnected. Must be a huge hit somewhere

Re: DSL Down completely

Here too in Jonesboro, GA.

I cant get to Bellsouth website and see alot of missing page, timeout and it comes and go and it is slow!

I call BLS support and a recorded region wide outage and wait time is 60+ mins if you want to talk to an agent.

Two days ago they did a upgrade to 770 code but I have no idea what.

And now this.

Down for me in Miami, Fl Help Desk number busy and 411 flooded.

Trying OpenDNS now.

DSL went out in Huntersville, NC (just north of Charlotte) as well. Switched to OpenDNS and things are working. I had the same issues with trying to call Bellsouth. "All circuits busy." or just a fast busy signal.
