said by Folk :When Bellsouth's DNS servers are working (which is 99% of the time) they will always be faster than a DNS server that's off the Bellsouth/AT&T network. That may be true if you only look at network latency, but what if the BellSouth DNS servers themselves are slow to respond? |

Is there an issue here or should OpenDNS not impact VPN connectivity?
Thanks. |

Yeah, we're still out here in South Florida too. ATT said it could be up 24 hours before service is restored. That's not what they told the media. They told them everything is bact to normal knowing full well that it wasn't. Does this mean we get a refund on our monthly bill. I run my business off my DSL line and it is digging in deep here... 2:20 est. |

I'm in North Florida myself. Yeah I can't even get through to talk to someone. 24 hours? That ridiculous, alot of people are losing money and even casual users need internet on a daily basis. |

I'm in the Ft. Lauderdale area, and around 6PM I started to notice that I could get on some websites, but others showed DNS errors. An hour later it was all gone, except for the connection to e-mail. I guess the DNS server for mail.bellsouth.net was not affected. At about 11PM I checked again, and the problem was resolved. |

I had heard one solution of possibly leaving the modem (and any routers attached) off for a minimum of 2 minutes to a max of 5 minutes to clear your PPPoE session off the router and you should be able to pull new after that.
I have not been able to get anyone to confirm that yet. -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this. Koetting Ford, Granite City, illinois... YOU'RE FIRED!!

| reply to gotoman A single router caused the failure for all of the DNS pairs that they have users in the 9 state area configured for? Yes, because if you notice that your nameservers are a long ways away from you, in an entirely different subnet. Who cares if they put a massive DNS server farm behind some monster load balancer and fancy Cisco router. If it's not a distributed design, with caching nameservers close to the edge, then a couple routers can create a major service interruption.
The only reason to build a DNS infratructure the way they have is "cost". It's more expensive to toss several hundred servers out onto their network and maintain them, but it's definitely more scalable. It wouldn't necessarily increase reliability because you have more equipment that can fail, but when equipment DOES fail (and it's not IF but WHEN) the number of affected users would be greatly reduced.
I don't know if their DNS architecture is a component of Shasta SSS or not. It sounded more like a provisioning system and I never saw any mention of DNS in the literature. if it is, perhaps they got stuck with it when they acquired Shasta. |

| reply to Elmo_Mellonhead I'm not able to change my DNS settings on my Westell Wirespeed A90-210030-04 DSL Modem. It's like expert mode doesn't work anymore and there is nothing editable. Has anybody here been able to use the OpenDNS addresses with this modem? I have my D-Link Router set up as passthrough (I think) and the DNS addresses there were 0.0.0.0. Changing them makes no difference to the modem settings. |

| reply to barton44 As of 7:45 my BS DSL is still suffering. I can get online but it is slow. Servers I can normally connect to with 100 ms of latency are now at 1300ms. At least I can get work done but forget about any R&R which is what I'd rather be doing at home anyway. DSL customer support is just a recording telling everyone to try again later so I hope they are at least working on this issue. |

I'm not an expert at all but I did speed tests with both the open dns that I changed to last night during the outage and then reverted back to the Bellsouth DNS and did a test. On open DNS my download was a little bit faster but the upload was a lot slower. For now I've changed back to Bellsouth and am using Treewalk.
You could just experiment like I did and see what seems to be working best for you. -- jbooksNOSPAM@bellsouth.netremove the "nospam" from the email to email me.mhttp://www.johnsonsusedbooks.com |

| reply to barton44 I am able to surf the net fine,i even recieve decent ping responces from the dns servers mentioned in this thread i am still getting terrible latency trying to play games. I did a trace route to us.logon.world of warcraft.com everything looks good in the first 7 hops 25-29 ms. once i hit hop 8 (tbr2.attga.ip.att.net) it jumps up to 74 ms and continues to climb for about 5 hops and then just starts timing out. Any ideas? |

@bellsouth.net | reply to barton44 I forgot to mention this translates into a latency # between 300 and 900 or so while in world of warcraft which makes it quite unplayable. |
