anon : I experienced the spotty outage like others here. I accessed the netopia modem/wireless router advanced mode and changed DNS. Vista systems can access the wireless. What is with that?
So, today I am thinking I am going to change the DNS back and when I access the settings, found that it has already been changed to provider defaults??!! How did that happen?
I am going to manually switch them back to Opendns to see what happens.
Did changing DNS in the modem mess with our wireless router and access point?

anon : Well, you could actually install your OWN nameserver on your own system and allow it to do recursion. You can even get ISC bind packages pre-compiled for win32. Just be sure to restrict the allowed query sources to your local network and to secure the cache.

The only drawback to this is that you won't get the extra performance of having a big pre-loaded cache nearby, but I guess this situation has made light of the fact that AT&T's servers are not-so-nearby and not-so-reliable. At least you don't have to worry about someone spoofing a domain if you run your own server.

I cringe though at the idea of everyone running their own nameservers or configuring their hosts to use nameservers far far away. This is NOT how DNS is supposed to work! A big network like this should implement a metric ton of caching only nameservers and there should be several in every city where they have customers. They should not be pushing DNS traffic from every customer over their backbone. It's crazy.

anon :  WHY?! AT&T/BS been lying... I've had regular outages usually only about 20 mins but recently longer as much as an hour. Today was the last straw! And the last time I called, the tech had me plug directly into the wall for my PPoE connection and voila! It worked. So they said it's my router. I know it isn't. This started happening only recently with tonight's 4 hour outage being the worst. So they don't want to tell us the truth? I would rather they told me that there was an outage that will last for a while instead of blaming my router. Every time I've ever called that's what they tell me. GRR!
anon : > I thought you all use the auto DNS thing on your PC network.
>
> I always specify my own LAN IP address and DNS.

I have my PCs set to use static IPs also. If you're using a router on the home side of your DSL modem you have to tell it what DNS servers to use. My Linksys BEFSR41 has spaces for three DNS servers -- right now it has the Bellsouth Georgia servers in the first two positions, and one of the public DNS servers in the third. The PCs have spaces for two DNS servers (this is Win XP) and I have the router (192.168.1.1) entered first and a different public DNS server second. If the PC needs to resolve a name (URL) into an address it first asks the router, which in turn asks Bellsouth server #1, then Bellsouth server #2, then the public DNS server the router knows about. If all three of those fail, the router replies back to the PC that it can't resolve the name. The PC then tries the DNS server it has in its own second position. So you potentially can have a setup that can try a total of four DNS servers one after the other before failing completely.
