anon posted : I experienced the spotty outage like others here. I accessed the netopia modem/wireless router advanced mode and changed DNS. DSL was back up and so were our wired computers. However, we provide a wireless hotspot (not using the netopia wireless) and we can not connect to the wireless with XP based systems. Vista systems can access the wireless. What is with that?
So, today I am thinking I am going to change the DNS back and when I access the settings, found that it has already been changed to provider defaults??!! How did that happen?
I am going to manually switch them back to Opendns to see what happens.
Did changing DNS in the modem mess with our wireless router and access point?

Actually, it resets all of the factory settings regardless.

If you using a Linksys or other router as your gateway and access point, you will need to change the Westell back to bridged mode. Again this assumes you hit the reset button on the back of the Westell.

Don't hit reset unless you know what your doing. If you just feel the need to tinker, print or copy down every screen of information on the Westel (90.168.1.254) before hitting reset. Then set the Westel as the gateway and DHCP server. This way both devices can be accessed from the local network.
pencoyd posted : OpenDNS works fine as is with most VPNs, as long as they don't "split" DNS. Most VPN software will use the DNS of the network that you are VPN'ed into, which is correct. Some software tries to use your set DNS to resolve the VPN domains, which doesn't work. But OpenDNS has a simple checkbox workaround, detailed here: »www.opendns.com/support/article/164

John Roberts
OpenDNS

DSL customer support is just a recording telling everyone to try again later so I hope they are at least working on this issue.

anon posted :
A single router caused the failure for all of the DNS pairs that they have users in the 9 state area configured for?

Yes, because if you notice that your nameservers are a long ways away from you, in an entirely different subnet. Who cares if they put a massive DNS server farm behind some monster load balancer and fancy Cisco router. If it's not a distributed design, with caching nameservers close to the edge, then a couple routers can create a major service interruption.

The only reason to build a DNS infratructure the way they have is "cost". It's more expensive to toss several hundred servers out onto their network and maintain them, but it's definitely more scalable. It wouldn't necessarily increase reliability because you have more equipment that can fail, but when equipment DOES fail (and it's not IF but WHEN) the number of affected users would be greatly reduced.

I don't know if their DNS architecture is a component of Shasta SSS or not.
