Primus Latency

Anyone else in the Toronto/London area get terrible Latency with Primus? I just switched from Bell's high speed to the Primus High speed bundle because it was A LOT cheaper, and they both preform relatively the same Download/upload wise on speed tests. However my latency to game servers, and just your average cmd ping tests are incredibly high like 150-180ms usually. Was wondering if anyone else gets this problem and if i should just pay the extra money and go back to Bell.

150-180 thats fast!
Since i switched to Primus, around 7.30pm to 11pm my latency is usually 250ms or worse. Not unusual to see 450-500ms, with bell was always under 20ms and at work usually around 8ms. I had a Tech from Primus at the house and he was able to see it, problem not with the house and i'm still waiting to hear from Primus if anything has been found (he was there 5 days ago). Its cheap and great if it woirks, if it doesn't; good luck!

During the day Primus is very fast, however once 7pm comes around my speed drops dramatically (from around 4.5Mbps to 500Kbps) until 3am then the speed returns to normal. My latency also shoots up from 75ms to over 200. Gaming with XBOX live is almost impossible. I'll constantly disconnect, especially while playing halo 3 (all my ports are open and xbox live has the open status). I haven't called Primus as I don't think they will be able to do anything. I think their network is over saturated and they need to do something about it during peak hours. I'm in Ottawa by the way.

My latency is 89-200 on any given second after 6 pm..I'm only 5k/m from C/O..I made a call into primus on Friday to see if I can get my line transfer to a remote..but they have to go thru bell to see if there is room on the remote..If your on Triple bundle package my advise is to call them up and see if you can be switch to a remote seeing how you had Bell before and had good speeds..but they will only contact Bell if your on the Triple value package..the Tech was asking me if I knew anybody who had bell in the area..and of course I don't because just moved here..so all I can do is wait and hope I can get the line transfer..because I also play of lot xbox online..thru the xlink kai..don't have a xbox live account ..and my connection holds more players in a game than when I was on a Rogers connection(THROTTLED)..

Give them a call is the best bet! and try DMT tool to tweak your modem to get a little bit more out of the connection..there is other treads on DMT in Teksavvy forum I believe..

alright all the best!

Does anyone else find that in the last couple of months Primus has been almost impossible to game with at night? Maybe it's just me, but since about the beginning of October I have found that my internet is so slow and my latency is so high at night , I sometimes have a hard time even browsing the web. But as soon as it gets past 3am or so, my internet just shoots back u p to normal speeds and latency. I know users of Bell are having similar issues, but I thought Primus used all of their own equipment.

Its not just you guys having latency/slow speeds, its pretty much everyone in general with Primus, worst part is they won't do anything about it. I have left messages for a manager to contact me, still waiting. Tech was at the house and confirmed problem to be on there side, not my house/PC.. Sad.......

You'll be paying the extra money alright like a buck fifty a gigabyte over and above 30 gigabytes a month if you go back and don't forget the throttling.

I'm going to be installing a dsl splitter at my demarc point and replacing all of my current phone wire with cat5e, so I'm hoping this will help solve some issues or at least rule out any issues that Primus might point the finger at me. Once that's all done, I'll be giving them a call. Anyone know if you can be switched form interleave to fastpath with Primus?

Thanks

Just wanted to update you guys on my progress with getting the line change that I requested about 2 weeks ago from Primus..I noticed last night that my speed profile has been update to 3megs down now..which I'm pleased with..and my latency to primus.ca website was 88-100 or jump to 200 at times but now i'm get 9-12 max now! big improvement.. So the best thing to do is give them a call.

·Primus Telecommuni..

Hey all,

I just switched from Bell to Primus in November. With bell the connection was good. Constant reliable fast.

Now with primus the connection sucks. Long pings. Lotsa hops. Unsteady speeds. I thought it was going to be a simple switch but when I told Bell I was finished and was switching to Primus (long story) they put me on a Primus/Bell shared 3meg line that was super saturated.

Primus said my long pings and crazy hops would be resolved by switching to a 5meg line... after two weeks... got it hooked up but the connection is still saturated.

Tech support has told me on two separate occasions that Bell was to blame and that by the end of January these connection issues would be resolved.

Anyone else hear that?

I'm in Montreal. Wondering if Primus has any good network connections???

Hummmm Network has changed a bit. Check out the tracert to www.primus.ca

1 2965 ms 3 ms 3 ms 192.168.99.1
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 61 ms 61 ms 69 ms core2.tor.primus.ca [216.254.130.165]
4 61 ms 61 ms 61 ms web.tor.primus.ca [216.254.141.10]

Hop 2 is new, it is refusing pings, but pings are great!

Ping statistics for 216.254.141.10:
Packets: Sent = 10, Received = 10, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 59ms, Maximum = 1046ms, Average = 159ms

And this is during prime time! This is on a interlace,1Mbps profile @ 5km away!
How's everyone ping time form all over the Primus network???

spepin77 if you have anything to do with this, thanks a bunch! Will keep monitoring.

Hey KC,

Glad to see this.

Starting last Friday we have made some changes to our BRAS that serves all of Ottawa, much of Montreal and London. These areas should now be much improved to what they were previous to last Friday. I would like to hear from customers in these areas to tell me what type of improvements they've seen with regards to their latency and speeds during the evening (or even if they havent seen an improvement).

In the meantime, there are still changes scheduled to happen over the next 7 to 10 days, which should improve things more.

WOW, working over the holidays! thanks!
Primus has got a bad rap around here. First billing extra GB on "unlimited" internet, then with poor tech service, and now "slow" network. But having someone like you on the forum really goes a long way to smooth things over.
We all know that any network is always a work in progress, but if you keep the end users informed, it keeps the hate mail down to a minimum.
So are all the connection still being aggregated in Toronto still?
Thanks again KC

Yes, the connections are still coming back to Toronto for aggregation. I wouldn't expect this to change until late 08. In the meantime, after we complete a few more things, there should be no reason why the connection terminating in Toronto has any negative effect.

i'm in Toronto..and if my upgrade is due to the network maintence and not a switch to a remote its all good for me! I love the fact that my connection latency is way down and I'm off interleave and onto fastpath

My connection has been rock solid since you've made the changes. I went from average latency of in the 200 - 800ms to always below 40ms. At night I hardly see a drop in speed now, whereas before I could hardly surf the web, let alone do any online gaming. Keep up the good work spepin77. I think Primus users should thank you for your great support. Also, thanks for keeping us updated.

Thanks!
