| Comcast 30% vs. Google 57% (and growing)
OB CC Content: With all the discussion lately around "neutrality" and "xx-opolies", why is the government so interested in Comcast while one of the largest, most controlling companies in the US continues to grow without any scrutiny?
The Federal Trade Commission is close to approving Googles pending $3.1 billion acquisition of DoubleClick with no conditions, according to TechConfidential, a blog published by The Deal. The story is sourced to a lawyer involved in the merger review.
Consumer and privacy advocates asked the FTC to either block or impose sweeping conditions on the merger that would put an extensive array of personal data of nearly every Internet user on the globe into the hands of one company.
It is estimated that Google accounts for 57% of all US searches. Although there is competition in this area, this combined with privacy concerns and the fact it makes Google the dominant leader for online advertising before this deal should raise at least some concerns.
Isaac Garcia from Central Desktop Blog writes, 'How much does Google pay *itself* to claim the top ad position for searches relevant to its own products? Google holds the top advertisement (Adword) slot for the following key words: intranet, spreadsheet, documents, calendar, word processor, email, video, instant messenger, blog, photo sharing, online groups, maps, start page, restaurants, dining, and books... ...if you are trying to advertise a product that is competitive to Google, then you'll never be able to receive the Top Ad Position, no matter how much money you bid and spend. How different is it than MSFT placing its products (Internet Explorer) in a premium marketing position (embedded in the OS)?'"
Unlike the FCC focus on Comcast, Google appears to growing their control around Internet search and online advertisement domination without any Federal involvement.
The story reports that FTC approval is expected as early as next week. -- "Believe only half of what you see and nothing that you hear." - Dinah Craik |

| reply to telcolackey silly comparison why should there be federal involvement with Google?
They don't own the internet, and you're not forced to go through their cables/services to get to Yahoo Search, or ASK or MSN.
If you don't like google you can always switch, or build your own search engine and let anyone use it.
You can't just build a cable plant because guess what's going to happen to your last mile access! And if you're lucky you'd get sued out of this earth
I dislike Google's growth and enormity/ But I can't seem to keep Firefox search on yahoo for too long. A choice I've made because I can.
For WIRED TV I have no choice like most others. Comcast or nobody. Until Uverse comes along or Fios for the lucky ones. |

| reply to telcolackey I agree with jagged.
That was a silly comparison. That is like saying McDonalds has a monopoly on fast food and shouldn't be allowed to build any more of their chains. People have a choice in these conditions. That is not always the case with Comcast.
I would say google has a better search engine than yahoo, msn or ask. -- Ycats »www.carwhip.com

| So are satellite, IPTV, or on-air broadcasts (now in digital and HD) not alternatives to Comcast? Or does Comcast somehow interfere with these things in your area? -- Interested in open source engine management for your Subaru? |

I agree they are a better search engine, but they are also branching into many other things and search is the first step in the Internet. If you control search and advertisements you have a huge advantage over competition. |
