Canadian Sniper wiping out Taliban Snipers in Afghanistan. These video
shots are not made through the shooter's telescopic sight. They are made
looking through the spotter's scope. The spotter lies right next to the
sniper and helps the sniper to find and home in on the target.
The sniper is using a 50 caliber rifle. A 50 cal. round is about 5.45
inches long and the casing is about an inch in diameter. The bullet
itself is one-half inch in diameter and roughly one and one-half inches long.
Pay close attention to the beginning of the video. A Taliban is laying
on top of the peak in front of you... when you hear the shot fired....watch
what happens. The sniper is also about a half mile away... or more. A
Canadian sniper in Afghanistan has been confirmed as hitting an enemy
soldier at a range of 2,310 meters (7565 ft/1.43 miles), the longest
recorded and confirmed sniper shot in history. The previous record of
2,250 meters (7369 ft/1.4 miles) was set by US Marine sniper Carlos
Hathcock in Vietnam in 1967. The Canadian sniper was at an altitude of
8,500 feet and the target, across a valley, was at 9,000 feet. Canadian
sniper units often operated in support of US infantry units, which were
grateful for their help. The recor d lasted only one day, until a second
Canadian sniper hit an enemy soldier at 2,430 meters (7860 feet/1.48
miles).
The Canadian snipers fire special 50-caliber McMillan tactical rifles
, which are bolt-action weapons with five-round magazines.

Fake fake fake fake.
This video has been circulating the internet for years now. It is not people that are being shot, it is prairie dogs/Richardson ground squirrels with a fast expanding bullet most likely a .22-250 or something similar.
Military bullets don't expand that quickly, in fact, they don't expand at all. Those violent expansions are from a very fast, small caliber round, most likely polymer tipped or hollow point.

EDIT: I can understand how people with minimal firearms knowledge would think that the big bad .50 would do this to someone. Especially after watching shows like "Future Weapons" and the like where they show it penetrating 6" of steel from 1 mile away etc. The fact is Penetration = no expansion. Expansion = no penetration. Very fast light bullets expand violently on impact and are used for smaller game. Heavyer bullets penetrate deeper and are used for larger game (and humans) to ensure that the vital organs are reached. Larger diameter bullets (.30 cal and up) never "explode" people like that and smaller diameter (.224) expand too soon on impact to reach vital organs (except when FMJ is used) |

If anyone has seen the show "Future Weapons" on Discovery a recent episode included a segment on a new, semi-auto .50 cal sniper rifle being produced in the UK.
The show's host (retired SEAL) tried it on a target 2000 yards out (I think). Being semi-auto, he was able to discharge the magazine (5 rounds total) with as much accuracy and in a fraction of the time as a bolt-action rifle.

Thank you for pointing out its Fake. Also note OP has not challenged.
Apart from the record 2,310/2,430 meters, it was on CBC series and what I saw there was different. In that Episode they showed the dead body after they reach that spot. Episode also showed why the sniper force was disbanded.

I watched both. And 47 to 51 secs in to the video you can see it is a person moving before being shot. Whether it is REALLY Afghanistan I can't say though. |

2 edits | Just watched it---groundhogs. Even if it was a person a human body wouldn't fly like that----perhaps a head or limb but the whole body wouldn't explode.
I have a .22 hornet that'll turn a groundhog inside out but just leaves a small hole and a lot of damage inside a deer or similar life form.
The guy in this video was probably hit by a .223 similar to the groundhog video or possibly a .308 which is a nasty round also. No explosions but wouldn't want to be him either way.

any person hit with a high calibre round like that wouldn't explode into pieces...it would simply go through you...it is the same thing where people get shot with hand guns or shotguns in movies and get blown back 15 feet and thrown through a window...a bullet does not have the mass to push a human body, it simply goes through it. |
