said by siiiigh :
Why no mention of the fact that 50cents a gig is profiterring? There's laws against that. It literally costs them 1cent with their peering arrangements. Heres the deal as it is....The 2 major peering networking in Canada are peer1 and cogent.....Yes there others but I'm not going to go through them all....Now there is math involved here so here we go.....(deep breath)
We will use peer1 for this example.......
Peer1 charges Rogers X amount for the bandwidth
Rogers takes X amount adds there costs to transport it to your house in there network....(yes it does cost them money....higher bandwidth usage means more to maintain and higher costs of expansion.....) This total C
and than take C and multiply it by a certain percent markup......
So it is not possible to get 1 cent bandwidth.....
As far as what there actual costs are per GIG I don't think any of us lame man will ever know as they most likely will not share that info......... -- common sense isn't so common....is it? |

1 edit | Peering is done between "equals" ...
vis Rogers, Cogeco, Shaw at the ISP level. Mostly it's done through Torix in the Toronto area. The goal here is that data is passed between equals with no charge except the transit costs to Torix or between the equals and the peers contributions to keep Torix running. Bell is not a participant in Torix and does little peering.
Peering is also done amongst transit bandwidth providers such as Cogent and Peer1. The idea being that Peer1 will carry so much Cogent traffic and Cogent will carry an equivalent amount of Peer1 traffic based on flat fees and significant differential bandwidth costs.
Either way costs still exist and they're certainly not at 1c per gb! |

Actually, the excellent bandwidth monitor is the main reason I chose Tomato firmware over others. |

That would just leave vlan1. Correct? |

| reply to kalak Yes, I use Tomato as well to track my bandwidth. But I do notice some differences in tracking from Tomato compared to Rogers, mainly due to upload portion. For example, Tomato would report 0.5GB while Rogers would only report 0.3GB. And over the course of the month, the Tomato bandwidth would over-estimate my bandwidth usage compared to Roger's Bandwidth tracker. But it's still a good indicator when Roger's bandwidth tracker screws up.
I think the difference in reporting from Tomato and Rogers has to do with the network. For example, Tomato tracks everything that is leaving your IP including connections within Rogers' network. While I think Rogers' bandwidth tracker only track what leaves their network. What do you guys think? |

| reply to sbrook said by sbrook :Nope. Rogers tracks everything through your modem. They *may* be subtracting an allowance for things you can't help. Yes they do substract an allowance for internal traffic...That they have no choice about..... Usually things like ARP packets and any number of other bits and bytes that could possibly get added into your monthly total.... All providers do this as standard practice....If they didn't you could easily loose 20 GIGs or more a month of your cap depending on the type of network......
And as a quick side note Cellular providers to them same thing with certain types of traffic with PDA and non PDA based devices.....(and yes rogers is included in that) -- common sense isn't so common....is it? |

| NorthernPal, why did you feel the need to black out anything other than your Account Number? And if you're going to black out your monthly usage, make sure to black out the % on the right as well :P
Noticed the same on my account today... guess that's why I kept getting 404 errors when trying to access it on Tuesday afternoon... |

Also in this pic is the notification history tab, I haven't noticed that before. |

Guys, Just want to confirm. I'm on EXPRESS, is the 60GB limit in effect as of now, today? I have yet to see this on the rogers website or received any notice. Sorry if I am looking at the wrong place. Just so frustrating accessing their website. Thanks |
|
Stewy Premium join:2007-12-12 Kitchener, ON | Yes Express is 60Gig with 7Mbps. As soon as you log in under "your Rogers Services" click on Internet Usage and it will tell you. |

| As of today the only information that they'll start charging is based on unconfirmed rumours. Granted the rumours came from a source which is probably trustworthy, but that doesn't mean it will actually HAPPEN on Jan 1.
So, until Rogers actually PUBLISHES or PUTS THE CHARGES ON A BILL, we can only continue to treat this as rumour.
