11.5K feet from CO...any way to improve speeds?

At that distance I am not qualified for a higher speed package.
I currently can only go as fast as 1.5mbps downstream. Which with overhead is about 1.25mbps maximum

I doubt any RT is coming within the next few years so what are my options here? I remember a tech saying a long time ago I could do copper wire from the pole? Would that help me in this scenario?
I wanna get faster DSL
Will a 3rd party telco perhaps be more forgiving with their distance and speed caps?

I see DSLExtreme is offering a 3mbps plan for 22/mo

would I qualify

As long as your telco is AT&T you won't be able get any higher package then what you have currently. Anything higher I'm assuming will destabilize your line and cause lots of disconnects, reconnects.

Sad part is, that's sort of what's been going on.
I'm at +12,000', and I'm on at 3008/512kbps package, however AT&T has decided to cut that package, and unless I stay on it month2month, I'd have to go Uverse or leave for better than 1.5/384kbps packages.

I had the same issue. The nice fellows in the direct forum helped me verify distances and what my line can handle. Unfortunately my line isn't able to handle faster speeds, but i would recommend opening a thread in the direct forum to see if your luck may be better than mine.

One other possibility if your lines can't handle any faster speeds than Express is to buy a second DSL line (dry loop service to keep down the costs) and a dual WAN, load-balancing router.

With this set up, you won't have 2.5 (2x1.25) speed tests, BUT if there are two people at your place, each will have their own 1.25 speeds. Conversely if you are doing a lot of downloads, you can start one at 1.25 and then start another also at 1.25.

In many cases, the line _can_ handle higher speeds, however, AT&T does not wish to deal with anything they'd consider 'marginal'.
Even though I have 3008/512 solid (now), AT&T won't sell me service at that rate, and my other options are cable, or Uverse Internet only.

... and you know your loop distance is too far? Is that based on what your ISP's check of the AT&T database? Has that database distance been verified by an MLT test by ASI?

Both:
AT&T techs (been out here in the past) have told me that I'm at 12,300', also AT&T, DSL-Extreme, Sonic, etc. have all removed the 3008/512kbps package from my options since Uverse was deployed here.
I can't say if it has been verified by an MLT test by ASI, but I would imagine that it has.

The Pro speed plan or its predecessors of the same download speed (3008/384 or 512) have never been offered for loops of 12,300 feet length from a CO. If you managed to get it at that length, then it was a provisioning error and not an official distance qualification. See: »Ameritech - SBC FAQ »AT&T HSI Package History.

So your current Pro speed plan with DSLExtreme is really a grandfathered error.

Its very likely a grandfathered error. Who would I call to verify my loop length from AT&T ?

One of the ASI techs in AT&T Direct: »/forum/sbcdirect could probably run an MLT on your line. Maybe with the recent rework you have had, your loop has shortened.

Explain to them what you have been told about your loop length previously, that you are with DSLExtreme on their Pro equivalent speeds, and that you couldn't come back to AT&T now if you wanted to because you can't qualify for Pro speeds even though you have them currently. You might post a copy of your line stats on your new line. Frankly your attenuation readings now look too low for "12,300 ft." to me.

I'm not sure what category your post would fit under in Direct. You really aren't the standard Prequal, nor are you having Trouble, so maybe call it Prequal with a good explanatory title? Should your MLT reading qualify under the distance requirements for Pro, they could amend their database to reflect the shorter distance.

I've put a post into AT&T Direct to see what comes out of it.
Also, I called into ASI, and they say my line is clean, but I don't qualify for 'elite' (duh), and if techs have a problem with me on 'pro' to call them.

Gee, no one is mentioning a DSL outdoor splitter? I don't mean those little dinky $5 "filter/splitters" that plug into your inside phone wall plugs. I'm talking about a $40-$50 plastic box that mounts on your exterior wall home next to your phone company's NID. You route the incoming phone line directly from the NID to splitter box. Then, the splitter box has two outlets: 1 for DSL internet and the other for telephones. Using an splitter (not the right thing if the word "filter" is used and these things cost more than $40) will significantly improve your speed when you are a distance from the CO/RT. I'm 18k from the CO and of course SBC/AT&T wouldn't give me service. I got service from DSLExtreme.com but at low speeds of 384/384. I installed a splitter and was able to get 768/384. Enough to run an XBox 360 with no issues and serve as a backup to Comcast when they go down (as they do a few times a week).

They are fairly easy to install and will almost guarantee you of a higher speed. Just make sure the line from your NID goes straight to the splitter with nothing else connected to it. The line from the splitter's DSL pins should go straight to the DSL modem with the shortest wire possible, and then the telco outlets on the splitter usually don't matter. Phone work fine no matter how long the wiring, etc.

Tupak, What kind of modem are you using?

Have you checked your signal levels at the test jack outside?

reply to prestonlewis
yeah, I have a splitter on the outside
it's an older NID though (not like pictured above)

the modem is some simple black square one. Not infront of it now so can't say. But it's the one they send. (got it less than a year ago)

I posted about 2 years ago in SBC direct and they told me same thing. Oh well...looks like I'll have to keep cable internet.

Have you checked for an RT in the last two years? We are still turning them up, and have been over that time.

He might be similar to me, in that VRAD's are being placed vs. RTs.

Perhaps, but it really is just all speculation until we take a look at the line, CPE being used, etc.
