Always could on a business plan if you were close enough. Have heard about trials about it on residential plans, but little else.

Let us know. I may be interested. I'm happy with my 3/768 @ $29/mo... but like so many greedy geeks I gotta have bigger, better and faster....

My guess is that with the recent "price for life" push they have plans to offer a speed increase in the near future. Of course it will be a higher price and you will need to break your "price for life" plan to get the speed increase.

Nah, they've always allowed for upgrades, and even downgrades, in service. They've even been mostly sensible about when and when not to hold people to the ETFs.

I don't think it will be available in Md.

I hope this is true, although being anon makes me worry a bit. 3 mb down is getting dated fast.

I am in WV. I called Verizon and inquired about this. The CSR stated that she would check and then she ran a speed test on my number. Then she came back saying only the 3 mb was available at my location.

So maybe this is for real.

I called in, and the reps were very courteous and knew what I was talking about. Unfortunately, this is still a trial promotion and, at this time, it is only available for new customers.

Sorry for leaving that out, I'm in Brooklyn, NY. Wish there was a way that they could extend this to existing customers; I've had verizon DSL since 1999!

If I knew that were true, I would cancel my service and resign up.

I emailed Verizon and this is the response I received.

Thank you for contacting the Verizon eCenter. I have received your email dated December 7, 2007 regarding your High Speed Internet service. My name is Yolanda, and I understand your wish to increase your connection speed to 7.1 M/768K.

I apologize for the delay in my response, and I regret any inconvenience to you.

Currently, the 7.1 M/768K residential plan is only available in Delaware. Unfortunately, it is unknown when this speed will be offered in additional states.

Although additional follow-up is needed, it has been my goal today to address your concerns related to the faster High Speed Internet service. I hope I have succeeded in meeting that goal. In the meantime, if you have any other questions, please let us know. We look forward to serving you.

Thank you for using Verizon. We appreciate your business.

Sincerely,
Yolanda
Verizon eCenter

We should start flooding verizon with requests for 7.1mbit and see if they ever start pushing it to others!... 3mbit is very outdated now...

I asked a contact of mine and the 7.1M was made available on a limited basis to new customers only in all east and west locations. He tells me that not all CO's will have it and the service will require a technician to install a splitter. Also, upgrades are not yet available.

For those that think canceling is the solution, I will tell you that by reading so many posts here on folks that wanted either faster speeds or the promo pricing that it is not worth it. The hassel is too great. It is a dumb move. If they are releasing 7.1M in limited areas, this means that no too far in the future, the upgrades for existing service will be made available.

why in the world would you need a splitter? unless they are channel bonding...

I think that's standard practice for 7.1 service.
