RyanPremium join:2001-03-03 Quincy, MA | Heads up some Seagate 7200.11 shipped with bad firmware Just a heads up to anyone who has or is thinking about getting a seagate 7200.11 drive. Some of the early drives were shipped with buggy firmware which resulted in the computer only seeing 8 megs of cache instead of the 32.
If your drive shows up in windows or bios as a ST3500820AS you will need to update the firmware. Correct firmware should match the label on the drive as
Model numbers
1000 GB ST31000340AS
750 GB ST3750330AS
500 GB ST3500320AS

| Ryan, it was very good of you to provide that heads up! I just got a 7200.10 and I was looking to see if there are any firmware updates on it but I don't find any firmware for it, so I guess they only put up firmware when there is an issue.

 | reply to Ryan Have anybody tested the drive? I have 7200.11 with correct name, but buffered reads are very slow 60mb/s (tested by Sandra). Could it be the cache problem? Sandra also doesn't report the cache size of the drive. |

RyanPremium join:2001-03-03 Quincy, MA | If your drive shows up in windows or the bios with the correct model numbers listed above then you will not have this issue. It will only have the issue if your drive shows up with an 8 instead of the 3. |

RyanPremium join:2001-03-03 Quincy, MA | reply to Ryan Would also like to note that this issue must be bigger then seagate expected. They have now made the firmware public and you know longer have to contact support to get the download.

| At least it's just a (slight) performance issue and not a data integrity issue, I guess. Still very nice drives when they have the proper cache available. -- Interested in open source engine management for your Subaru? |

 | reply to Ryan Had one of these drive for 2 weeks. After dealing with tech support as well as other options, I have decided to NOT buy another SEAGATES product. As far as I can see they have NO support. Hello other drive manufacturers.... |

RyanPremium join:2001-03-03 Quincy, MA | What are you contacting support for? Is you drive bad? I cant really speak much about their support, but the online chat rep seemed very informative. I personally love my 7200.11 drive. |

m8trix join:2003-12-24 Phoenix, AZ kudos:3 | same here, online chat was quick.the firm ware issue was a mild one compared with what could of been, not all drives with the old firm ware were effected only some and they were quick to put a fix out for those it did effect |

 | reply to Ryan Your missing the point. I BOUGHT a 32meg cache! The ISO doesn't work as other people have stated. All I could getfrom tech support was the SAME firmware(look at my original message). I have over 30 yrs in computer science and I have never dealt with such incompetents. When I call and pointed out the firmware update was the same as the first(Nov 29) I got mysteriously disconnected. THERE NOT WORTH IT in my opinion. I love to check out their QA/QC.... |

RyanPremium join:2001-03-03 Quincy, MA 1 edit | How in any way does the iso not work? Did you read the directions? You boot to the cd continue out of the instructions then run the bat file which will update the firmware. Are you sure your entering the command properly? Sorry to say, but with 30 years of experience you should know that seagate has an excellent reputation. AD14 is the latest firmware provided in the link above, what other firmware do you expect them to give you? |

No one here stated it didn't work. It worked fine for me as well. Perhaps it's time to re-read the instructions with a fresh cup of coffee? -- Interested in open source engine management for your Subaru? |

 | reply to Ryan Other newsgroup have reported problems with the ISO image. I tried it on 2 computers,2 SATA cards and burned the CDs with multiple burning software. As stated I just want what I paid for. Has anyone been successful with the ISO image in this group(not the floppy)? Also why weren't these drives returned to the manufacturer for repair and testing install of still being sold? |
|
 | reply to Ryan This post is to clarify the AD14 ISO problem. Booting of the CD is fine(freeDOS). However, when running flash.bat computer just sits there and displays "attempting to load AD14ALL.lod. Then nothing.... just sits there and every once and awhile the CD drive light will come on. Tried the drive on multiple computers, multiple SATA cards and even burned the CD on different computers. I think I spent even time with this drive! |

RyanPremium join:2001-03-03 Quincy, MA 1 edit | reply to Ryan I just used imgburn to burn the iso and had no problem what so ever flashing.
They were not recalled because only a small percentage with that firmware had the issue. I would say if you cant get it flashed with your cd try to get your hands on a floppy drive and if that fails then rma it. Is the drive running fine besides the cache issue?
-EDIT- Did you remove all other drives? After you run flash it scans for drives and if you another hard drive it could cause it to hang. |
