steve1aPremium,MVM join:2001-05-07 Berkeley, CA | [Poll]Media Player(s) - 2008 Member Choice We are hoping to clarify a bit with this year's poll some of the Disambiguation that occurs when we are referring to Media Players.
According to Wikipedia:
Media player is a term typically used to describe computer software for playing back multimedia files. Most software media players support an array of media formats, including both audio and video files. Some media players focus only on audio or video and are known as audio players and video players respectively. The producers of these players usually focus on providing a better user experience as they are specifically tailored toward the media type.
Microsoft Windows comes with pre-loaded Windows Media Player. The latest is Windows Media Player 11, which is bundled with Windows Vista, and available as a download for Windows XP SP2.
Mac OS X comes pre-loaded with Quicktime Player for playing Quicktime movies and iTunes for playing a variety of media formats.
Linux distributions come pre-loaded with various media players including VLC, MPlayer, xine, and Totem.
This very notion of Multi-Media neccesitates a Multiple Choice Poll which is somewhat filtered by your Operating System itself and no perfect "all in one" or "one size fits all" solution to date. Layered into this are browser intergration and needs for a variety of codecs and add-ins to make whatever your choices are more robust and able to handle more cross formats.
Compatibility with portable and other external players may be another factor to consider.
And so we begin our quest for:
Providing the file types you have associated with your choice(s) will help us better capture which slice of the pie (chart) each player actually holds.

1 edit | reply to steve1a Windows Media Player 10 ( don't like 11) for wmv, avi, wav, mpeg,MIDI,aiff,au, and dvr-ms. Foobar2000 for mp3 only, it does what I want done fast. QT alt for quicktime file, don't like it but you need to be able to run those files. Last but not least Media Player Classic 6.4.9 for many things. For example if I find WMP 10 is running something to slowly for my taste I open it up in MPC for extra speed. I glad to see this poll, as I don't know much about media players. I'm sure I will get to read very useful post out of this thread. |

Thanks for the poll, steve1a !
I have a boatload installed, but I rarely use most of them. In Windows it's VLC for video and Foobar for audio 99% of the time. In Linux it's VLC, Totem, and MPlayer for video and Amarok (not listed) and VLC for audio.

I like the Windows Media Center (not the same interface as Windows Media Player 11 so I voted other) in vista, the tuner interface is much better than came with my avertv tuner. It displays less artifacts from signal degradation. I use it to play DVD's and some cd's. I can use my avertv remote to control it. Its unfortunately chock full of DRM, a nuisance I must put up with because of pirating and a need by content providors to attempt to control thier product. For music I listen to Pandora.com, love it. I also listen to the local radio, kpig.com. |
