| reply to steve1a Been using Winamp for God knows how long.... and I have been happy with it. Plays most all formats that I use, which is MP3 & WMA for music.
Video is almost anything... MPEG, AVI, DiVX, XViD, etc etc... Some videos won't play in Winamp, so then I fall back to VLC...
BTW - I use the All-in-One codec pack for my codecs. Works really well, but I don't think it is being updated anymore... -- "I reject your reality and subsitute my own!" - Adam Savage, Mythbusters "We're either gonna die or gonna fly...", Jamie Hyneman, Mythbusters - M5 Industries |

| reply to steve1a I use a number of players as needed.
These included iTunes Media Player Classic XP Media Center Windows Media Player 9 and 10 VLC Quicktime
But this poll asked for preferred players, and there's only one that gets my vote:

| reply to steve1a 2 computers with Media Player Classic the default on one, and VLC the default on the other. They have slight differences but I have found no real preference for one over the other. QT and Real Alternatives (MPC) on the main player.
Also have GOM and KMP »www.kmplayer.com/forums/index.php as non-default alternatives, which are useful from time to time. If I was stuck and could only have one player on my system, my choice right now would be KMPlayer
Two "other" players that have specialized used that I find handy. One is 1By1 »www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia···y1.shtml I can use it to play what is in a folder without having to create any playlist or manually choose the next song as one finishes, A very nice little FREEBIE quote: 1by1 is the smallest free MP3 player Tired of creating and updating playlists only to listen to your MP3s?
1by1 will play whole directories of MP3 with absolutely no need to edit a playlist.. it provides a simple interface and a variety of additional features like shuffle, sorting by name, date, shuffle, enhanced mode and some others.
Here are some key features of "1by1":
· FREEWARE! · No nags, no ads, no spyware! · Very smart size! · Handy ZIP archives, no installer! · No VB/VC runtime libs required! · No usage of the Registry - settings stored in local dirs! · Full Resume Play (remembers last played track and position) · Explorer like file navigation · ACM (MP3) and mpglib (MP3/MP2) support · Winamp input plugin support · Audio dynamics and stereo enhancer · Directory searcher (plays whole drives) · Cue sheet support · Favorites.
And another highly specialized one - Dziobas Player, which allows me to stream from a rar file. So if someone has chopped a file up into many rar packets. I can get one packet and use Dziobas to quickly check it to make sure it is what I want, and the quality is good. Stops me from having to download 40 million rar files and re-assemble them before I am able to see if it was garbage Very specialized use, but extremely handy from time to time. -- To be on a pedestal is to be in a corner |

| reply to steve1a •Audio: foobar2000 (uses less resources than Winamp5.x)
•Video: VLC and MPC Homecinema (I use the latter because of the EVR hardware decoding of my HD x264 video files). I also use CyberLink PowerDVD for HDDVD and BluRay playback (which is close to never!) -- The measure of an education is that you acquire some idea of the extent of your ignorance |
