Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator

Both of my Cisco boxes just downloaded an update.

ODN is still at 6.0.0.19
Looks like the update may have been for the OS and Axiom Middleware (they are showing dates of January 24th and 23rd of this year).

I'm in the Raleigh, NC market.

Edit: Image File is also showing a date of January 24th

I'm not sure when the update hit but our Motorola DCX3510 has ODN 6.0.0.19 now in the SoCal market. I've noticed no major changes other than the subscribed channel guide filter.

Is ODN 6.0 faster? I hope it resolves the 30-45 day latency on the SA and Samsung boxes! Good to see it is starting to roll out.

You can also supposedly change the color palette in settings. (Look under Display.)

I heard that you can now use the arrow keys to go from screen to screen more with this version as an option over the "A" "B" "C" buttons. Don't know for sure. ODN 6.0 also has preparation software for the cloud-based services being developed. In the coming years, TWC wants to work to get the settings and programs that clog up the memory of the legacy boxes to a secure-cloud based environment, where shows and settings sit on the server instead of the boxes!

The new Cisco's, Samsungs, and Motorolla's will start to get cloud services first. TWC will than gradually move them to the older boxes. They have been working to get the boxes more "uniform."

The newer boxes will have the six-tuner DVR, (might only be available for Whole Home or Signature Home Subs, for some time.) The local divisions will be making that call. (Summer Rollout.) Only the newer cloud based boxes will be able to eventually do an HD-guide., which is being developed as part of the cloud technology. No idea on any release dates yet. It's going to be an on-going process.

Speed wise, the box is about the same. Its only been a week or two since the update so I can't comment on the slow down issues. The settings menu is somewhat glitchy and the graphics overlap if you move too fast. The Motorola implementation doesn't seem to have the alternative theme but perhaps it was buried deeper in the options.

My friend in Syracuse, NY reports that ODN 7.0.04 is in his diagnostics page. He is still on ODN 6.0.19. He may be leaving TWC to look at more efficient whole home solutions, and better equipment from the competition. However, will miss the good retention deals that TWC has always had.

He reports that ODN 6 has been the most stable release for his area.

How do you set your box to automatically start on a particular channel each time? Thanks!

Hi!

This should work:

1.) Press Settings on Remote.
2.) Scroll to the Display Option.
3.) Go to "Power on Channel."
4.) Press Select.
5) Choose the channel for which you want the box to tune to every time you first turn on the TV.
6.) Save your selection.
7.) Press Exit

*TV now tunes to your designated power on channel each time.

I had 13 series programmed into my DCX3510-M, and have not had any trouble the last few months. Everything would record as scheduled. Until I got a surprise tonight.

I had the power off some this weekend, so I had the box turned off, and rebooted Sunday night. I didn't check to see if my "scheduled recordings" setup was still visible since I had no reason to think they would be gone. Tonight when I got ready to watch Monday's recorded programs, my Monday recordings had not recorded. So I got to looking around and all of my "scheduled recordings" list was gone. In fact the choice "scheduled recordings" did not even appear at all when into the LIST mode. My recordings through last Friday are stlll present and show up, but nothing is shown to be scheduled in the future.

I rebooted again tonight, and still nothing. I will have to set all 13 series back up.

I tested the feature by choosing a program to record, then I looked and the "scheduled recordings" feature has returned, but only for that 1 program. I can't figure out what happened to wipe out all my "Scheduled Recordings". Now my confidence level is not high.

Any thoughts?

Followup 24 hours later:

I added 6 series back into series manager and scheduled them for tonight. While they still remain in the Series Manager, they are not showing in Scheduled Recordings and the box does not go into recording mode at the specified time. I am able to initiate a manual recording of a current show. I haven't noticed any other problem with either Navigator or my cable service.

Addendum 2:
Another 3 hours has gone by and now it seems to be working--recording the new things listed in Series Manager. Very bizarre.

Addendum 3:
Rather than drive 20 miles to return the box, I talked to Tech Support again tonight. They told me that my box was indeed receiving maintenance to it last night and that could have affected the box's memory temporarily. He said that last night the maintenance work was being done on the customer boxes, and that tonight they were doing the maintenance on the head-end side. So I've decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and not return the box yet, assuming the glitch was due to their maintenance. It's a bit unsettling, however, not to know whether to trust it or not.

Important information about this update:

Digital Phone subs who got this update, should also check their Caller ID prompt settings if they want the prompt turned on. The new software turned mine off. (Go to Settings and Caller ID, and Select on for the Display Prompt to make sure your Call setting prompt is on, if that's how you had it before.)

"I just noticed that deleting a recording brings up an are you sure type menu press yes or no."

I am a little confused. The Yes No prompt has been around for ever.

Hob,

From what I remember, there's always been an "Are You Sure you want to delete this recording (from DVR recorded list) where you could say "A" to Delete or "B" to save. But in ODN 6 and above, you can't use the "A" or "B" button for delete or save, you have to down/or up arrow to highlight a "Yes" or "No" prompt" than press Select.

At first I was confused when updated, but its highlighting a prompt on a new screen in ODN 6 that instead of the "yes" or "no", you used to use "A" or "B" to save or delete in previous versions of the guide.

Same thing when you have set a reminder. Used to be a particular button, now you must use up/down/sel to select either 'view now' or 'stay on current channel'. No big deal, just different.

I was watching tv just a bit ago and I decided to get into the diag menu and I noticed that they finally upgraded to 6.0.6 from 5.0.28, not sure exactly when it happened but I'd have to say in the last week. I have not noticed any differences in the ui. As you can see I am in the Nebraska market.

Yesterday,

TWC added the Display Color Change Option to the Settings here in Wisconsin. Damn, is that thing UGLY!!! You talk about saving memory? Kill that feature and bring back DVR Compensation! Actually we still have DVR Compensation, cuz we am still on ODN 6.0.19 and not ODN 6.1.05 yet. When I first tried it, it said, "Not available, try later." Than in the middle of playback of a recording, I tried it, the box locked up. Had to hold the power button in to get the light to flash to reboot the box.

Anyway, the point being that the options they give you are "New" or "Classic." The "Classic" if it went back to the old Navigator interface, might be something good, but its just a yellow cursor background instead of the default blue. It takes about 20 seconds on the SA-8300HDC to change the color scheme. The Time Grid tries to mimic the old Navigator/Passport colors, the problem is the background remains Black. The change really isn't the old color format. it seems to be more of a half and half. This reminds me of that "Graphic Transparency" feature with the Transparent Info bar. I think that is gone, but not sure.

Does anyone like the Display Color Option?

"Does anyone like the Display Color Option?'

I am tempted to say "who cares" but I know the Blue on Black drew some complaints.

I could see many who would have a "Who Cares option." I wonder if this option turned on might strain RAM? Or if resources are minimal when the new skin is applied? What people are really complaining about is the loss of DVR Compensation. Hobs, did they give a reason officially why this feature was removed?

I think it was a memory related thing. I will miss DVR Compensation when it is gone. It was cool because it was a nice feature that I don't think any other competing DVR's had.

San Diego now has ODN v6.1.0_5. Nothing changed except for the lack of DVR compensation.

what is the problem with Press A to try again with SDV on Navigator? I have two iGuide boxes still and they are able to view the SDV channels looks like it is a major flaw in the Navigator software UH!

I have been told with both MDN/ODN versions of Navigator that "Press A to Try Again" NEVER works. Such a problem is often related to the typical SDV, signal, wiring, or equipment issues, that are more the influx of cable TV's inconsistent division infrastructure, than the flaw of the guide software.

Satch

PS. Wisconsin dropped DVR Compensation, with last night's release of ODN 6.1.5.

well it has to be a software flaw as I went to the other room with a motorola DCX3400 that is running iGuide and it was able to switch to the channels that were saying press a to try again.

Oh and I noticed my motorola DCX3510 box is showing a record for ODN 6.1.0_6 that it is the next version waiting to be installed wonder what is included in it instead of 6.1.0_5? the box is still on 6.0.0_19 though.

The box was getting a good signal so that is not the problem.

If only the last number is changed, (ie- 6.1.05 to 6.1.06) I am sure that is just a bug fix release in the query. You almost have to have the first or at the very least the second digit to change, like with most software revisions for major new features or updates.

I know ODN 7.0 is being tested in some markets, but no one has it yet.

do you have any insider info as to when we will get DVR folders for shows in the recording list? I would hope this is a 7.0 feature No wonder why some people seem to not like the motorola DCX-M boxes in North Texas it takes for ever to delete recordings compared to iGuide boxes.

Was HD Auto-tune still active in 6.0.0_19? I don't seem to have that feature.

Sup?

No news yet on ODN 7.0 Auto-Tune HD is being dropped to make way for a new feature coinciding with the planned Universal Theme line up. TWC wants all systems to have a theme based channel line up and to map any channels with an HD box to tune automatically to the HD station if one is available when an SD channel is selected.

Customers with SD boxes will eventually only get SD channels on SD boxes. In other words the Theme-based/Auto HD will eventually get to that point, but without the on/off Auto HD prompt.

I believe auto HD was dropped with Navigator version ODN 6 and MDN 3.6. Not sure of current MDN version number. RUMORS of a better search in development have circulated for all customers. A source of mine with TWC said "some nice features" are coming, but did not offer specifics.

My personal belief is the lack of Keyword Search is one of Navigator's biggest set-backs.

We've had 6.1.0 5 here for not quite two months now and Auto HD still remains active. All of the locals, ESPN, ESPNEWS, ESPN U, Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Soccer Plus, NHL Network, MLB Network, CBS Sports Network, Fox News, TNT and Outermax are all Auto HD for us still.
