Okies on Ice...and a few Illini

Click for full size
said by KOTV :

About 6:00 a.m. Sunday morning, a Toyota SUV ran off the entrance to the eastbound Will Rogers Turnpike from Highway 412...

...A second wreck happened on the Will Rogers Turnpike just after 7:00 a.m. before troopers could clear the interstate of the first accident...four men in the SUV were not hurt...

...In Tulsa, a woman wrecked the Ford Explorer she was driving around 7:00 a.m...the driver had to crawl out of the SUV because it flipped on its side.
(Freezing rain + Okies) X SUV = Carnage!

It should be even 'more interesting' today. The storm continued to lay down a thickening sheet of ice through the night. About 10 p.m. I heard a comment that Midwest City (Tinker AFB area, just east of OKC) officially had over 1/3 inch. Tulsa (100 NE of OKC) had 22,000 people without power due to downed power lines. It's currently 27°F (-3°C) out now, and has been below freezing all night, so roads should be well covered in ice/black ice right now. I'm going to work late today!

On the up side: took my new car out around noon yesterday - roads were only 'slushy' then, and found that it handles rather predictably and civilized on the slickness. Of course, that says nothing about the over-confident SUV drivers on the road with me -- I think I'll go into work REALLY late today!!

It's really ugly today. I had tree limbs coming down all night and lost power about 5AM this morning! Driving to work there were not many people out and about. There is major tree damage all over this area and it's just going to get worse.

I've got power but it's coming and going so often I've stopped resetting the clocks.

My car, and most others, along with all of the shrubs and grass look like they're in an ice cacoon. It's almost 1 p.m. now and I'm just getting the car into shape I could drive if I had to.

Generally the ice was over 1/2 inch thick all over to the 'flat' surfaces (hood, roof, trunk) and in some places it was close to an inch where the ice had blocked drainage and water had puddled up and then frozen up.

Snow I can deal with; ice is another matter completely. Ugly in causing the power outages like Tulsa area has, and about 100 times as deadly on the highways. Not to mention that you can't make snow-cream out of it, snowmen nor even have a safe snowball fight with it.

Well, my 75 foot tall oak tree has been shedding limbs since early morning. A branch about 30 feet long is laying on the roof of my house. It doesnt appear to have penetrated but it was quite a sound! I was outside watching when it happened. Unfortunately I will probably lose the tree. Waiting on insurance adjuster now. Power still out, 2-3 days at least they are saying.

You all can just leave that stuff there. In 2001 the power went out and didn't return for over 14 days. The sounds of the tree tops coming out is something no one can ever forget. Then, put about 10" of snow to "cover it all up".

Yea man. What a time.

I agree, the sound of the tree snapping was a sound I won't soon forget. Or the ice falling on the roof before the limbs! Hopefully tomorrow I can get some pictures.

My sister lost power sometime Sunday night/Monday morning. I was feeling good that I still had power.

My folks lost power on Monday. I was still feeling good that I had power.

My alarm clock went off at 7:30am Tuesday, and after silencing the alarm, it went off again, this time due to lack of AC input power. Now I'm not feeling so good. At least there's hot water for a shower.

I'm quite happy to report that power was restored at 2:10pm Wednesday while I was out at client's office. I returned home with some camping gear, ready to cook dinner in the fireplace! Oh well. I'll keep it and use it next time.

I've lost just a few tree limbs. Too bad the tree that was planted too close to the house didn't fall down (away from the house, mind you). I still need to cut it down.

P.S. My mini-SUV can go anywhere. Wanna race? lol
On ice, any vehicle can go anywhere. The winner is the one who arrives, not the one who guns the accelerator pedal.

Going on ice is easy. It's stopping that's hard.

My power went out at 3PM Monday and was restored about 11AM today. I live and work in the Cherry Street area of Tulsa. Luckily, power was restored at work late Tuesday afternoon so I had somewhere warm to go and something to do for at least eight hours every day.

The 'hood looks like a war zone. They say the snow coming this weekend won't affect the trees. I don't doubt that as there are very few left.
