Centralia MO 10M DSL issues

I am getting faster uploads than downloads during certain hours of the day. Even using Centurytels speedtest I get insane results like this. During what I am guessing are peak times it reads between 78 kbps and 400 kbps, and late at night, it steadies out at 10.6 Mbps.

However, my upload speed is always consistent, no matter how screwy the download speed are (upload always clocks around 700k). Does this make any sense?

We have had a tech come to the house twice now, and everything is suppose to be fine on our end. In fact, the last time we had one here, wouldn't you know it, we read a solid 10.4 to 10.6 Mbps everytime we ran a test! But low and behold, I check that night after work, and we are back to normal again, with downloads clocking in between 70k and 300 to 400k...

They first sent us a new modem (the Westel) because we were capped at 6 megs, but they also stated that the old modem was probably causing the inconsistent speeds.
The new modem does allow us to get up to 10.6, occasionally.. But the speed fluctuation remains.

Same problem here in Columbia. I've had numerous techs come out but the problem still remains, so I'm guessing its simply CenturyTel not having enough bandwidth.

Whatever the reason, I'm going to keep calling in and reporting my problem. If they want to waste their money sending out techs to recheck my phone line, so be it.

*edit* I've asked specifically for a tech to come out during peak hours, but was told CenturyTel only uses contractors, who only work until 5pm.

The first tech I had said it was something about the equipment uptown? Can't remember how he put it exactly, but he got to see what we are dealing with, verified everything was fine here at the house, lines etc. and even acknowledged that something was in fact screwed up on their end.

Then I receive a message on my machine from them saying they reset something, and all should be well. It wasn't. Then the 2nd tech came, checked the lines blah blah etc., ran multiple speed tests, and this was in the afternoon mind you, would not drop below 10.4 megs. Strange.

He made the comment about having to switch some lady from 10 down to 6 because of a similiar issue, I am considering doing the same here and seeing if that solves the problem. I am on a 12 month contract, but being how I am not getting any where near what I am paying for, I think we can work something out.

The test show in my first post was taken this afternoon, this one was taken just now at 11:35 central time. I will run another one late tonight on the exact same location and I bet it is at least 9000k down.

There you have it. That is some ridiculous fluctuation in speed, no? 400k in the afternoon, 9000k at night.

Lucky me, my download speed is higher than my upload!

A tech called this morning and basically told me I was screwed.

*edit* forget what I said about download speed > upload...

That is baloney. Not sure what they told you, but it sounds like we are both get the run around. If you pay for 10M service and can't even consistently get half of that, something is wrong.

I am really curious if it is just 10M customers in certain areas of Boone County, or if people on slower packages are experiencing this too? The average joe doesnt even know what a speed test is, so they assume as long as their internet is working, everything is fine. Then again, the average joe probably doesn't pay for the fastest speed available and just assume that it is working right without checking it, who knows..

As I said earlier, I am considering trying 6M service again, but if that ISN'T the problem, and Centurytel either doesn't know how to fix it, or is pretending that they don't, I am going to go crazy. This is really frustrating.

My brother-in-law just downgraded from 10M because of persistent disconnects. I can just imagine how frustrating it must be to troubleshoot these anomalies only to discover in the end that your line just isn't suited for 10M service. I say "your line" but it's more likely what others here contend: insufficient bandwidth to your location to provide reliable service at 10M. Whatever it is, my brother-in-law who lives 7k ft. from the CO had to reduce his connection to 6M. He's a happy camper now.

I, on the other hand, live in the country some 22303ft from the remote with an advertised 768/128. My connection is rock solid through rainstorm and sunlight alike. There's at least one upshot to limited bandwidth. It takes a lickin' but keeps on tickin'. Oops, I should be quiet - wouldn't want to tempt the gods.

I live in Columbia Mo and am experiencing the same problems. During the day my internet consistently test at 10.5 megs down and 756 k up. But between the times of 6 pm to 10 pm or later my download goes to 700 kb. I have had numerous techs over and everything checks out fine. I was told to call and talk to a supervisor today and I did he said he was going to check into it but he hasn't called me back.

That is really strange. I wonder why our speeds are so different.

Yesterday a tech told me I was well under 8000ft from the local equipment, and multiple techs have tested my phone line, so it probably isn't that :/

I spoke with a supervisor this evening, and he will be contacting the local management to check this out in a little more detail (rather than the "Lets send out another line tech!" routine).

Same thing in Marshfield, guys. I'm paying for 1.5 down, which would be fine...1mb down would be nice, but I consitantly am getting much slower. About 35% of the time, I get between 18-100k, about 30% of the time I have between 100-300k, about 10% of the time, I have between 300k-1mb, about 1% of the time, I get over 1mb, and the other 24% of the time I don't even have a connection.

I've called the tech's 3 times now. They sent a guy out here once and he left a tag on my door saying it "should be fine now." On the phone, they had me removing my filter and trying a direct connection to the phone jack, etc, but nothing seems to help it. And, yes, wouldn't you know it, when I call tech support, my connection jumps to 1.5-1.7mbps...kinda crazy... The only lower package for me is I think 300kbps download, which I'd rather have the 1.5 obviously. Also, yes, my upload speeds are rather steady at 300ish most of the time, and sometimes they'll drop to 200ish, which is still fine since I don't game and don't upload much anyway.

Any ideas?

I bet you have entirely different set of issues than the 10M folks here.

I finally spoke to a supervisor and they acknowledged that they were having issues on their end and it should be cleared up by the new year.

After the New year things were still really slow during peak times. I called in a few more times and the tech said he would stay late and check it at a peak time. After he did some checking they finally acknowledged there was a problem. They said they had too many people on one card and were supposed to start switching people to a new card over this past weekend. It appears that my internet is back up to speed after 6 weeks of trying to get them to acknowledge the problem. Now it works perfect.
