| Over in the ATT forums, you can find lots of user experiences with hi-cap ADSL distance limitations since ATT began offering 6mbps "Expert Plus" and "Elite" tiers at low prices a few years ago. Bottom line, don't count on it working at full speed unless you're less than 7500' from the CO. It can work out to much further distances (some hold 6mbps reliably at 9,000' or more), but its very hit and miss. At that's just 6mbps. Verizon usually over-caps to compensate for ATM overhead, so their sync rate is probably closer to 8mbps.
If your modem has a diagnostic page, many will tell you the maximum estimated sync rate. That's usually the best way to tell if your line will be able to handle it or not.
Chances of qualifying were a bit better for ATT customers due to ATT's extensive deployment of Remote Terminals. Verizon seems to have eschewed these in favor of FIOS deployment. -- Laser eye surgery rocks! I love frickin' laser beams. |
