Re: Actiontec Limitations

I put a Buffalo WHR-G125 in place of the Actiontec and have noticed better wireless. I'm also running DD-WRT and boosted the wireless signal a little bit, so that probably helps as well.

Primary reason for switching the router was because of the NAT issues -- I would get the 'No IP for NAT' errors about 2-3 times a day, and that was without running any P2P applications, just a lot of different devices (4 STBs, 5 laptops, 1 desktop, 1 wireless printer and 1 Xbox 360). If Verizon purposely limits the NAT table in an attempt to discourage P2P users, I hope they realize the mess they're causing for people who just happen to have lots of systems and aren't doing anything illegal with them.
I have 4 PCs in my house. Could this be the reason why when I surf the internet would just die and restore itself within 10-20seconds, it is very annoying. I know it's online cause on a my file/P2P server it's connected to their NG.

I have their TV service but a better internet connection is more important to me and I will switch the coax to ethernet cause my old wireless router was rock solid.
That problem sounds different than the one I had. When my connection would die, I would have to manually unplug/plug in the router. Until then, nothing would be able to connect via wired or wireless, not even to internal resources (I couldn't even connect to the Actiontec router admin pages). I tried waiting to see if it could resolve on its own, and by time I got to 15 minutes, I couldn't wait any longer. This behavior was always accompanied by an entry in the security log of 'No IP for NAT.'

I should also note that I couldn't even browse to the router when that happens too so perhaps it's the same problem but it restores connections within 30 seconds or so...I will check the logs next time it happens I didn't even think to check there.

Make sure to check the security log under the 'Firewall' section. I was checking the other logs and never saw the 'No IP for NAT' errors and thought that I had a different problem, until I realized I wasn't looking at the right logs. =)

NAT Error : connection pool is full. No connection created [repeated 2 times, last time on Dec 15 11:48:06 2007]

this is the error that I get that explains why I can't connect to websites. It is such a pain in the ass...

Up until yesterday I’ve been happy with the Actiontec. I connected to uTtorrent yesterday and that apparently flooded the NAT table because I was not able to connect to web sites while the torrents were running so I checked my ActionTec log and there were several error NAT errors. I reduced the connections to 100 globally and the result was the same. For me the only thing that seems to stop the NAT errors is disabling DHT, I don’t fully understand DHT so I'm not sure what functionally is lost by disabling DHT. I was willing to swap out the Actiontec so I started looking into Buffalo WHR-G125 as you mention along with some other routers. I also checked the dd-rt.com site and I noticed they mention slowdowns as noted here »www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Ro···Slowdown so are you really any better off with this router and firmware? I’d have no problem buying another router but it would be it would be pointless to do if it’s still going to continue crash. It’s be great if dd-rt (or someone else) could create a new firmware for the ActionTec, or even better yet if a DSLreports member could hack out the cap from the ActionTec firmware so we didn’t have to buy new routers.

WPA2 encryption is current standard for a secure online experience. It's been available through the major players for years at this point. Of course Verizon should unilaterally release Actiontec firmware that enables this level of security, but alas, it appears only a determined few hackers report that they have it humming along nicely on their rigs.

If I have selected WPA2 on the Actiontec and everything is sailing right along, then what form of security am I running?

My understanding is the **new** Actiontecs can have WPA2 enabled with "generic" firmware.

After I put the WHR-G125 in place, I tested my speed at speakeasy.net (over a wired connection), and received 20 down and 5 up, which is the tier I belong to, so I personally have not seen any slow down due to using a different router. Looking at the page you referenced, it seems that the speed issue affects mostly those using P2P applications, so that's probably why I haven't noticed anything.

Even so, given the multiple times each day my router would stop working, I'd still take a slower but never (so far) crashes router over a faster, but crashes often router.

That’s just it, the problem occurred while on system was connected to uTorrent otherwise I don’t receive NAT errors & web page time-outs. We have 3 systems and a VoIP adapter connected to the ActionTec and that was the first time web pages timed-out in succession like that. I don’t use the p2p often because if I did I would have had this discussion earlier. Even though I’m not a big torrent user if I elect to use it I would like it to work without problems. I was actually trying to locate a WHR-G125 at one of the nearby Circuit Cities but the stores are all out of them which may be for the best since now I’m not convinced it would correct the p2p issue.

If you should decide to try the WHR-G125, you will probably want to act fast. Buffalo is in a legal dispute with another company over the technology in any of their routers which support 802.11a or 802.11g, and has an injunction against them preventing them from selling anymore routers with those capabilities (pretty much all of them) until the issue is resolved. All that's left are probably routers in stores and in distribution centers, would be my guess.

Thanks for the info, I seen that on their home page. If I want to peruse it and I can't get a WHR-G125 I'll see if I could find a Netgear router that supports Fios speeds. I've always had good luck with Netgear stuff.

I tried to log onto my actiontec router to look at the settings. i typed in "admin" for the username, but when I try to type in "password" I get three astericks for every letter I type and I am not able to log on. Does anyone else have this problem?

The asterisks are used so people watching your screen don't see what you are typing.

The default password will be password or password1.

Some browsers save passwords and this can complicate login. In that case, you put "admi" for the login, type in "password" or "password1" the password, and then add the final "n" to to finish off admin.

I upgraded to this firmware 4.0.16.1.55.0.10.4.3 from 4.0.16.1.45.160.27. My co-worker in the same town got his install a few months before mine and had an older firmware than mine and even though he had the NAT issue he never noticed the web pages not loading.

I hope this upgrade will fix the NAT issue otherwise I will have to make a run from that box...

I had a DLINK and Nim from Verizon and I had put an antenna on it (unscrew and screw the new one one) and the range was better as the Xbox is across the house.

I received the new Actiontec (shiny front) and the wireless range dropped significantly (Xbox could not see it). I connected the Dlink antenna and it can see it, but the signal is very week (1 red dot).

I really think the old setup was way better with the separate NIM getting the coax and then the router plugged into the NIM. I used their DLINK, but could use any router with that set up.

What is the upnp that should be turned off (and how do you turn it off)? I noticed that the system tray shows the icon for the upnp but I was not sure what to do.

My router is also cycling the connection on and off. Seems to do so ever 2 or 3 hours.

Some new notes. The Router seems to stay up for 2 or 3 hours, but the PC just gets the little bubble in the system tray saying Lost connectivity and then Local Connection 1 restored for no apparent reason.

I never had any of these issues with the Dlink (wireless) and the NIM combo.

I am thinking of disabling the wireless in the router, buying another wireless router and trying that out. If it does not help, go back to the NIM and use my new router (verizon just will have no access nor be able to support it)

Is this due to the small NAT table?

"Dec 20 18:38:40 2007 Outbound Traffic Blocked - NAT out failed First packet in connection is not a SYN packet: TCP 192.168.1.1:2555->192.168.1.2:2359 on br0 "
