Death of Qwest ISP service..birth of MSN Broadband

As some of you in the NW using Qwest will know, Qwest is planning to discontinue offering ISP services. They are also offering customers the "convenience" of transferring their existing accounts to the new MSN Broadband. All Qwest users are required to switch to another ISP by January 21st.

While the MSN offer sounds alright in the PR/Marketing letter sent out, MSN requires a 1 year contract for DSL service, and you'd have to pay ~$400 to get out of the contract. Plus, you have to register a full-blown Passport account.

Regardless, I'm not planning to switch to MSN Broadband. So I'm wondering which ISPs those of you in the NW like and would recommend, or avoid for that matter. I'm happy with anything from local to national. However, I'm down in Eugene, OR as far as local coverage.

Thanks,
Benn

I am a former Qwest Net suscriber and I switched to Qwest MSN DSL in October 2001. There is no 1 year contract commitment and I have never registered a full blown passport account. I have 1 pop3 email account and can add 8 more msn.com email accounts through http access (which also can be accessed in Outlook Express and Outlook XP) I ordered the deluxe DSL speed package for $49 per month. I got 2 free months to start and no installation charges. It came with a free modem which you keep if you stay with the service for 2 years. If you decide to drop the service you can return the modem or pay $99 to keep it. I am happy with the speed I am getting since I was on dialup before this. No cable access is available to me here so I am going to stick with MSN for now. It's pretty reliable!

I'm in Southhill (152 st e area) and it seems to be finally opening up to dsl. dslreports still shows me only capable of getting idsl at 144/144k thorugh MegaPath/Covad at $100 mo, or several other isp's all married to covad. Quest says they can provide dsl at 640/256. I'm still looking for a isp, I now have my dialup with earthlink but it doesn't look like they are an offered isp. I haven't seen pricing yet, you say $49mo, is that for the "pro delux" 640/256 service? What does msn offer for backup dial up service, that is, how much free time per month, number of dialup numbers across the us, etc?

Hey all. I live in University Place and I am having nightmares with MSN broadband. I used to be with Qwest also, but was forced to move.

I could waste space and rant and rave about MSN's service, but to save time, just look at the Horror Stories section write up about MSN in Washington (DSL Reports front page).

Save your self the time, and energy, and find another company to take care of you.

"Thanks for the memories" Qwest.

MSN does not require a 1 year contract, if you are an existing Qwest.net customer you can migrate to MSN using your existing modem. Don't know where you came up with the $400.00 figure but as a migration customer you are under no obligations at all.
