@rcn.com 1 edit | [Other] RCN in NYC blocking Torrents?
I been receiving this error message "connection closed by peer" on my torrent program since last night. Yesterday afternoon it was all fine. I have google the problem and it all says that its a ISP problem. Has anyone been having this problem? |

This is on the lower east side of Manhattan. |

@rcn.com | reply to TheJoker07 Yeah I'm in Queens. This sucks RCN Mach 20 is the fastest connection around me no FIOS here yet. RCN Mach 20 is only $40 a month for me and its a great deal but I guess I'll have to switch over to Time Warner... :-| |

| reply to TheJoker07 Yup same problem here in Rego Park, Queens. But the funny thing is I can still download at max speed or close on both a private and public tracker even though it says "connection closed by peer." I had to set the encryption protocol to "forced" but that was the only tweak. It just takes much longer to connect to enough seeds and get up to max speed now, all the while the indicator stays red.
I don't think you can fool whatever method RCN's using to shape traffic with just utorrent encryption, so it's a bit weird. Anyone else still able to d/l torrents at close to or at their regular speeds? |

However, I am also able to achieve decent speeds after some time. |

@rr.com | reply to TheJoker07 Joe Mirabella, I'm quite certain you've seen this thread but if you have any information on this occurrence, please shed some light on it as this is fairly important to me, and I'm sure a lot of other customers. Thanks. |

| They are DEFINITELY doing something. Everything else works fine. Tracker requests aren't encrypted so it's pretty easy for RCN to block them. But I'm really surprised that they would just block everything like this. It's not traffic shaping - it's interfering with the communication pure and simple.
Isn't there a law against messing with communications in this manner? |

| reply to TheJoker07 The same thing is happening to me, just a week after I upgraded to a 20mbit connection. I've had RCN for years and I've never had this problem. Could they be doing this just on the high-end connections? Are all of us with problems using the 20mbit pipe? |

1 edit | I'm on 10 and so is my friend. I know that other US ISPs go as far as traffic shaping, but do any others block connections to trackers as RCN is doing now? The other thread I found on dslreports about it involved another ISP, but it was resolved within several days and was never an issue again.

@rcn.com | The RCN tech guy told me that it looks like they are not filtering torrent protocol...but you never know how savvy the techies really are... Anybody managed to connect to trackers using a proxy? |

| reply to TheJoker07 Anyone else have eMule/eDonkey problems in NYC? Connection attempts to every server fails with a "... server is full" message. This started happening a few days ago. Neither changing port numbers, bypassing the router nor disabling firewall helps. |

| reply to TheJoker07 Its definitely not just on 20mbit connections b/c I'm currently on a 1.5mbit. This really blows if it's to continue like this. RCN is significantly cheaper than TWC but if this persist I would be forced to switch. I still don't understand how I can still d/l if they are actually blocking all connections to the trackers themselves. Although, I do see that I'm not maxing out as usual d/ling but still close to max speed. I don't use any direct p2p, just bittorrent, so I'm not sure about problems with those. |

| reply to tNYC I'm able to connect to tracker through SSH tunneling (encrypted traffic) as socks proxy using azureus.
just ssh -D portnum username@yoursshserver
then in azureus goto tools-options-connections-proxy options
check 'enable proxying for tracker communication' check 'i have socks proxy' host 'localhost' port 'enter portnum'
ps: portnum is any unused port in your computer. if you're using windows, google for how to create ssh tunnel using putty |
