I wonder why...

Every time I read about something like this, I wonder why the carriers don't protect themselves and their subscribers from outrageous charges by cutting the service off if it's being used at a rate that would drive the "average" consumer bankrupt.

A friend of mine who received an $800 data bill made the same arguement... he talked the provider (Telus) down and he was able to upgrade his package to the highest tier would brought his bill down to $150.

Any sane provider does, most providers (eg. Fido in Canada) gives each account a "advance" of say $300, 75% of that advance it will send you a SMS, when you hit 100% it will cut off your service until you phone in and deal with the charges (read: pay them off).

I have no idea why Bell doesn't have a feature like this, but it shows you just how greedy they are.
