Is there something wrong with my CPU?

I had my file server running some NNTP downloads overnight. I noticed it was unresponsive this morning and had to be rebooted, this is what the syslog says:

GPF - so its not heat.

Might have some bad memory - is it ecc? Power gremlin - on a UPS?

Looks like it was mucking with your disk (unlink?) - could be a really badly borked disk, fsck it?

No, just regular RAM. I wouldn't be too surprised if it were the UPS, I had a really weird problem the other day where it would discharge for a few seconds every minute until it exhausted the battery. Haven't had the problem since though.

I guess I could do an fsck, it's a 1TB RAID5 XFS array.

I would recommend running memtest86 to rule out the memory.

Sorry but had to point out the last line in the log. Kinda funny, don't ya think?

Looking forward to seeing how you resolve this.

I'm running memtest right now, how long should I let it run for?

Well, ideally at least 8 hours. But I've found that often bad memory will show up in the first hour or so of running.

One thing I just remembered is that I have a cron that runs on my PC to backup files to the server at 4AM everyday. So shortly after that runs I get the error...coincidence or not?

That's definitely a good data point. Could be the filesystem caused the panic then. fsck time

I'll run that after memtest. Currently at 2 hours in and no errors.

I think the memory is probably ok. Go ahead and start fsck'ing

So, I'd unmount the fs, then do xfs_check /dev/sdx?

Not sure about XFS, sorry. :/

Since that ran for only about 10 mins and didn't return anything.

Actually, I just checked my cron. There is only one cron that runs at 4, and two others run at 2-3, so that means it's probably not filesystem related, maybe something to do with the actual files being transferred?

I'm guessing with "Bad RIP value" error, it's likely race condition and/or stack corruption.

Probably nothing wrong with hardware, but software problem. So updating to later and mosre stable kernel should fix that problem.

Ack, I was hoping to avoid that. I'm one kernel behind the newest on Debian as I had such a hassle installing the drivers for my RAID card before, which didn't seem to apply to the newest kernel.

Maybe when I have some time I'll try to get the drivers installed on the latest kernel, but for the life of me I can't remember how I did it. I know it took quite a bit of work..the card is the Rocketraid 2320.

If your UPS is a standby type and was flip flopping, all bets are off. Power fluctuations can affect memory that no memory test would expose unless the exact circumstance can be repeated. The same holds true for the RAID channel.
