Good question. According to Wikipedia, watching streaming video at VHS quality requires 1Mbps. DVD requires 5Mbit/second.

I doubt the data link is providing 5Mbit/second but it might be capable of providing 1Mbit/second.

Just guessing but he may be downloading and then watching. I doubt the data rate is consistently high enough to support VHS or DVD streaming video. (Unless he's watching postage stamp sized porn movies...)

If he's downloading DVD quality, that's about 4GB/movie. If he watches two per night, that's 8GB/day, 240GB/month.

That's not a lot so it sounds like AT&T had some pretty stiff data charges
