I have:
Windows XP SP2 on a desktop Westell 6100 at 6 Meg/Sec Dedicated pair to the modem with a filter on the NID
Here's what's happening:
I can surf with no problem, but if don't surf for a few minutes, or walk away from the computer for awhile, I suddenly can't go anywhere. I haven't lost sync and the connection's still up. As soon as I reboot XP OR the modem everything's fine and I can surf as usual.
Web accessing programs including IE6 are useless. AVG and Adaware won't connect to check for updates. HOWEVER, I can check e-mail and both my website's domain accounts (locally hosted) are accessible, but my Centurytel account is down.
Upon restartingt XP or the modem and the software attempting a connection, there's almost always the popup message "Unable to authenticate password for xxxxxxx. Please retype password and try again." Keep in mind, this is the same password I've already saved in my connection settings, so when simply trying again to connect, it finally takes on the second attempt.
This occurs with either a Ethernet or USB connection...doesn't matter. QOS is disabled, hibernate is turned off.
This began four months ago with a new computer hooked to a new 10 Meg/Sec connection. That connection was losing sync, which resulted in the dedicated pair and decrease to 6 Meg service, which is great and causing no problems.
Here's my latest data:
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 7168/896 Margin (dB) 15.5/8.0 Line Attenuation (dB) 36.5/14.5 Transmit Power (dBm) 18.9/12.4

It's not XP or else just a modem restart wouldn't fix it. I'm pulling my hair out. Any ideas? |

Thanks anyway... |

mikehdWhat day is it?Premium join:2000-07-11 Lebanon, OR | IIRC when I was using my 6100 in router mode (so that it provided the PPPoE connection), I never saw a connection message on a client. When I ran it bridged and had the PPPoE on my XP box, I would get a similar message if I didn't have the set up correct.
I currently run my 6100 bridged with a netgear router providing the PPPoE connection.
Based on what I've experienced, it sounds more like you have a XP PPPoE issue.
Can you post a screen cap of the error message? |
|
KeiferWPremium join:2003-05-19 West Plains, MO 2 edits | That's not it Mike. My modem has to be making the PPPoE connection, not XP. I'm using ALL default settings for it. Took it out of the box and plugged it in...nothing fancy. I wouldn't even know how to set it up 'bridged' and have XP make the connection.
I'm starting to think something's happening on the server at Centurytel with my account... |
|
mikehdWhat day is it?Premium join:2000-07-11 Lebanon, OR | They could have shipped it to you bridged.
Did you run an install disk on your PC to set up your account?
The thing that is really perplexing is how your modem would be publishing an error message on your PC.
Again, if you could capture the error message (a screen cap would be really great), I think it would be helpful.
What were you using before the 6100 was delivered? Did you ever set up your PC with an install disk from CT? If you open your network connections from the control panel do you see a entry under Broadband Connections? |

said by mikehd:What were you using before the 6100 was delivered? Did you ever set up your PC with an install disk from CT? This is a brand new computer I just had built and loaded with XP. No DSL's ever been on it till now, and as I said, no Centurytel software's being used. Only the internal IP from the modem...
said by mikehd:If you open your network connections from the control panel do you see a entry under Broadband Connections? The entry in my Network Connections is "Local Area Connection", and it's only my Ethernet which the modem is hooked to, and as I told you earlier, it's not set to power-down so it's not timing out.
Like I said, simple configuration, which leads me more toward a server-side problem at Centurytel... -- The entire earth, and everyone on it, is going to experience Divine Intervention. |

Do you get this message after you open a browser, or after some program tries to get online, or what? The 6100 doesn't pop up any message like that unless you're sitting on the config page (192.168.1.1) when it doesn't authenticate. |

I've got the homepage in IE6 set for the homepage of the modem, so when I start my browser it automatically goes to the modem's homepage with its IP in the Address area. The modem automatically attempts to connect. That's when the Internet light on the modem goes RED and the pop-up occurs, with wording as stated in the OP...
I click "OK" in the pop-up, and the modem automatically attempts a second connect, which is usually succesful. -- The entire earth, and everyone on it, is going to experience Divine Intervention. |

I just checked, and no, there's not an update available. And as I said, yes, I've put up with this for over four months. I'm at my witts end, so I apologize for any perceived frustration.

FINALLY! Using the Westell 6100 in router mode seems to have fixed the problem. My PPPoe connection is now through Windows XP, not the Westell...
I pushed the reset button on the back of the modem, thereby clearing all data in it including my logon name/password. Then, within Control Panel, I opened Network Connections and selected New Connection Wizard. Upon entering my logon name/password and saving it to my desktop, all I have to do to go online is click the connect button in my new connection.
I've been online now for over 48 hours with no drops in service. I can walk away and come back minutes or hours later and still be online and available to surf immediately. This new connection has also provided a secondary benefit: With the connection through the modem, as it was before, my computer could be seen via a port-scan through Shields Up!!. But now, using the PPPoe through XP, all ports show "Stealth".
MANY thanks to Brian with Centurytel Tech Support for suggesting this. And my sincere apologies to those here who felt I was 'short' with them. I've put up with this problem for six months and I was at my wits end, so I hope you take that into consideration and don't condemn me too harshly. I do appreciate the effort put forth to help everyone have a more enjoyable Internet experience...
