How can I format usb drive thats write protected

I have a usb drive that I can only use one third of because the other 2/3 has a partition thats write protected. How can I format it and get the free space back? I try to format with windows xp through disk management and my computer with no success can someone please help..

Have you looked at the folder or file I assume that is write protected from a cmd prompt and tried to change its ATTRIB ?

Can you delete the partition?

No the partition wont delete? wont allow me to change the attributes either..

that sounds really odd...
does it show up in Computer Management > Storage? if so you should be able to delete both partitions and combine them. right-clicking a drive in My Computer and "Formatting" doesnt delete or edit partitions, just the file systems on them, so you shouldnt be able to delete the "write-protected" partition without using Computer Management or a 3rd party tool.

I had this problem as well with a key.

Try the HP USB key cleaner or formatter, I forget the name. (Try google).

You can't do it with the windows format tool.

Is it a sandisk by chance? Took me a while to figure this one out, but eventually I got it...

try deleteing it in windows setup???

gateway formater will work with any usb drive too

If it is a u3 drive you may want to use the U3 uninstaller.
